Exactly. People have to make a living somehow, and they can either do it by shooting (which means weddings and events) or by flipping burgers. Why not have a place here where they can refine their skills and their business to the point where they can pursue their filmmaking as well?

I thought I said my peace ...

We're assuming these weddingographers are pursuing filmmaking ?

Sorry BG, didn't see your reply until after I posted.

Maybe; I haven't met many wedding shooters who don't harbor aspirations of being filmmakers.

But the point is: these are folks using these products and trying to make a living. Hardworking professionals who could do very, very well at the business if they wanted to (it's not all that hard to make a couple hundred thousand dollars a year shooting weddings if you're really good and your marketing skills are good).

I think wedding/event shooters have as much business here as, say, music video shooters, or commercial producers.

Glad to hear from Jason that he's not as concerned with the ratio. The "no's" are still stacking up...ha! Can't quite figure that out. I think maybe a lot of aspiring movie directors don't like to be reminded of the fact that there are quite a few people out there making good money with their cameras in practical, albeit somewhat mundane ways (compared to directing a film) while they're not making any money "aspiring." Other than that, I got nothin'...

In any case, there are many folks on this board whose careers have nothing to do with feature films and probably many who don't even have the desire to - and have carved out a much more practical career in video production shooting weddings/events. And I'm sure there are many who have lucrative careers shooting weddings, love it, and are working their way to shooting a feature some day as well - such as myself :)

I'm an optimist and I agree with slimchrisp's thoughts that the work of wedding shooters CAN and SHOULD be more artistic and this seems like a fine place to help them strive for artistic and technical improvement alongside their peers.

Barry says it pretty well - if you love to shoot, weddings sure beats flipping burgers. :)

I voted No, because I would think any questions relating to shooting Video events and so on can most likely be answered in the other subforums. Say if someone has a question about what kind of light to use at this wedding... it will be found in Lighting, What Mic to use on the Bride, it will be found in the Audio section... see my drift here...?

I always thought of DVXuser.com as the filmmaker community and DVinfo.net as the event videography community. If we add a wedding/event section my whole world view will be shattered.

Then I'd get over it.

Then why not offer threads in:

reality shows shooters
bar mitzvahs
trade show and conventions
visual presentators for corporations
special events

Well, the thing is, all of those (with the possible exception of reality shows) all work right in the "Weddings/Events" section. Heck, IMO, you wouldn't want to separate them out that far, because there's going to be a certain amount of commonality in approach.

If it's only a user community, then why the threads on directing ? screenplay writing ? film discussion ? cinematography ? special effects and stunts ? #D software ? film festivals ?

Because these are all things that "DVX Users" have an interest in, in the process of using their cameras? Similarly, there are those of us who have an interest in using them for events. For me personally, every time I have ever used a DVX (or an XL1S, or a GL2, etc.), it's been an event. I have yet to attempt to make a film (maybe someday :) ), but I still find DVXUser to be a good resource for my needs. With an Events section, I think it could be even better.

This one's getting buried again, so....bump.

Any other event shooters interested in a new sub-forum? Now's the time to come out of the woodwork. :)

Well, I'll stick my neck out here and vote yes. Unfortunately making shorts hasn't been paying my rent lately, but wedding videos have. It would be nice to get inspiration from other talented shooters here. Something to get me out of the "time to make the doughnuts" mood I get in before loading up another multicam sequence.
