Polarizing filters

Being the camera junky that I am, I was flipping through the B&H catalog the other day in an effort to beef up my Christmas list. Somewhere between the tripods and lav mics, I realized that I don't have a polarizing filter for my DVX. This seemed like a simple enough gift suggestion, but when I turned to the filter page, there were half a dozen different filters with "polarizing" in their names. I'm not looking for anything crazy, just a standard filter for decreasing reflections and making my images look pretty. I think I want a rotating mount. I thought that was standard on a polarizing filter, but some of the filters in the catalog specified that they had rotating mounts, which implied the others do not. Short of merely asking for a B&H gift card, what filter should I put on my list?

The first thing you need to do is figure out how you are going to attach it to your DVX. Are you going to use a matte box or is it going to be a screw on filter?

If you are using a matte box, which one? Not all matte boxes are compatible with all filters. Make sure both the matte box and filters are of compatable size (4x4) and are designed for each other. BTW, you'll need at least one rotating stage to get the best results.

If you are using a screw on filter make sure it's 72mm (which is the correct size for your lens). Also, make sure you get a circular polarizer (rotatable) instead of a linear polarizer for best results.

The brand of filter you use is a subject of much debate so I'm hesitant to give you recommendations.

Now that I've properly hesitated, I personally like Formatt filters (unfortunately they are very expensive).

i have a b&w linear polarizer & it works fine (& rotates) on my dvx, i've read many posts on this site saying that not being able to use linear due to focus issues is a myth & that you are paying extra money for a circular one with no extra benefit. its worth doing a search on this subject
