Polarizing filter

I'm buying a polarizing filter for my pannie and in reading about it, I found out that you should use a circular polarizer if the camera has a beam splitting meter. Is this what the pannie has? Any recommendation on a filter or on using it?

Re: Polarizing filter

I've never heard of this advice, and I use a 4x4 square polarizing filter. Any thoughts on where this advice comes from and what the harmful focus effects are?

Thanks!

Re: Polarizing filter

the DVX doesnt need a circular polarizer.. a linear one will work exactly the same.

but since its only a little more money.. you might as well get the circular, an be covered in all cases, since you can use the filter on any camera youll ever get.

Will a nice linear polarizer work well over a UV filter on the DVX?

I lost my Tiffen Circular in the field today, but to be honest I don't miss it so much after all I have heard about green glass. Also, I find screwing the 2section filter on dvx to be a pain because I often end up just spinning the outside section. How about a little spacer to help get the polarizer on and off? Or, will that cause flare, and I just need to work on my mounting technique?

Note that screwing with the focus is only if the camera is set to auto. In manual mode it's really not important :)

I just heard, from a salesman, that linears mess with with zoom lenses but are fine for prime lenses.

So far I have heard that linears:
-Don't work with digital
-Don't work with autofocus
-Don't work with auto iris
-Don't work with SLR
-Don't work with zoom lenses

And ALSO that linears:
-DO work just fine with DVX100A because the light and focus sensors tap into the image after it reaches the CCDs.

I just don't want to get it home and realize I can't use focus assist or make slow zooms. I am fairly sure I will never put this 72mm polarizer on anything other than a digital camcorder, so that's not really a factor.

I lost my polarizer recently and I really need one soon. I always use a UV filter. I am looking at the B+W multicoated Linear Polarizer for $80 compared to the Circular for $130.

So, what do you think? Linear multicoated? enh?

Many film SLRs use beam splitters in their focusing mechanism. The polarization of the incoming light is used in making focus decisions. For those cameras (only) a circular polarizer is required when using auto-focus. Digital cameras and camcorders do not, in any case I know of, use this focusing technique. It would make no sense. Feel free to use a linear polarizer on your DVX.
