Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it I need a circular polarized filter if I want the auto focus to operate, but if Im going totally manual focus - can't I use a linear polarizer and achieve the same effect? There's a pretty big cost difference.
Perhaps an expert on video camera prism optics and metering systems will respond with definitive information, but here is my understanding:
There is some tendency for beamsplitters (both mirror and prism type) to polarize reflected/transmitted light. By using a polarizer infront of the lens and sending polarized light into the system, there is the possibility in certain orientations and conditions to affect the reflected/transmitted light in a way that prevents the metering system (auto focus etc) from seeing what it needs to function properly.
It is also possible to change the color shading characteristics of the camera under certain conditions-- which might result in subtle green and pink hues towards the edges of frames.
Because of this, the only 100% technically correct solution is to use a circular polarizer (which for any that may not know, de-polarizes the transmitted light, after the first part of the filter polarizes it so that you see the polarized effect without sending polarized light into the camera).
In actual practice many use linear polarizers on prism type video cameras and have no problem--but there is a potential for some issues under the right set of conditions.
I hope this helps.
We (at Schneider) made the decision to include the more costly Circular Tru-Pol in our DV filter kit for the reasons listed above. I would be curious what has been the esperience of users on this board with linear vs circular pola's on their cameras.
Bill, I sell circulars exclusively in all my camera packages. Always have, and never had problems. Your DS44K100 4x4 kit is doing really well too, which has the circular pola in it, and also the B+W slim 72mm pola, becuase it doesn't vignette over the B+W UV filter. Great products, great job, and thanks for the info. ;D
