Pol filter on the ARRI 300w ??

Hey... I just found a bargain for a couple of ARRI fresnel plus' so I picked up a 300 and a 600 with spare bulbs for 450 dollars. Great condition!

But the 300w came with a pol filter in front of it.

Now I know how these things work on lenses, but what's the point on a lamp? And is it even a pol filter? (sellers words...)

A polarizer on a light source can be useful for controlling reflections in copy stand type work, or when shooting closeups of small shiny objects like jewelry. I don't think I've ever seen one used on a normal full-scale set, but there could well be applications I'm not aware of.

But David may actually have the answer in #2.

Does it give you any color shift when you put it in the light? Is it glass and does it have a metal band or is it bare glass around the edges? It could also be a UV filter to either save gel or if the light was used to light something like artwork. Just my $.02.

Yeah sorry for the scarce description. It's round, glass with a metal rim and one pin sticking out from that rim. I'm still on my way home so will snap the photo when I get there :)

I'd be inclined to believe it's not a polarizer but a dichroic daylight converter. It could be a polarizer but I've never heard of a glass polarizer meant for a light source, only the Rosco polarizing gel.
