Point and Shoot Camera

I know that there a lot of pro photographers here who would look down on point and shoot cameras, but for right now I'm not looking to get into photography. I'm going to university in the fall and I just want something that is portable to carry around with me. I'll later invest in a DSLR when I get into it more. I've stumbled across this Sony camera and I'd like some opinions on it before I go ahead and buy it.

If anyone could explain to me what features it has or doesn't have that'd be great. I know the optical zoom is only basic, and that's fine for me with this camera.

Any other reccomendations would be nice too. Around the same price range or a bit higher. I'm selling my Panasonic PV-GS120 for $400 US and I realized what I needed to buy earlier, I don't need to buy anymore so I thought I'd invest in a digital still.

You should also look at some of the PowerShot cameras that canon offers. They are 'point and shoot' but they also allow you to turn it on manual and select shutter speed, aperture, etc...

Thanks, I'm really looking for portability actually. I'd love manual settings, but when I decide to start to use those I'll get a full out DSLR and start from there. After using a complicated camera like a DVX, how hard can it be? haha. Anyway, I've also looked at the Samsung i60, but that's also an MP3 player and video player, neither of which I need. I'm looking for the best quality at 5 or 6 megapixels with as slim a design as possible.

Thanks! I was just considering those actually and think I may pick one of them up.

Thanks, beautiful cameras and with the cost of them going down, I'm really tempted to forget buying a P + S and go straight into the DSLR side of things. Alas, I know it will be used like my DVX--for larger events where portability doesn't matter. I saw this Nikon as well and was wondering as to some of your opinions.

Ahh, all these cameras are compact and easy to slip in my pocket and are fairly good brands but I have NO idea what I'm looking for in them. (I liked that some of them shoot video at 30fps, but video is really none of my concern...just a cool feature).

In a P&S digicam the portability factor is BIG... I would like to have a little pocketcam that's always ready. I had a Canon G6 and it could take some really nice pics for a P&S... and I was really happy with it, but the problem is that it was neither one thing or the other. Either get a DSLR or get a cam that fits in a shirt pocket... comfortably.

From my trip, for all my good photos... my very favorite picture is one that my shooting partner took with this little sony digicam that was the size of a pack of cards! Having the cam on you and ready to go is more important then anything else for this type of cam... get the smallest one that you like. My .02

I really dig the small Sonys in this class and the Casios...

I have the older version of this camera I think which was only 7.2 mp. However, best camera in the world. I went to Ireland with it and I ended up with some beautiful pictures. The battery life is awesome, low light sensitivity is great pending you know how to handle it. Very very happy with this camera.

But note that I'm not exactly sure if this is a newer version than the one I have or a different kind. It looks a little different, but I think its the same. Anyways I highly recommend this.

Ahh, sorry for not responding sooner guys. Work's been pretty busy. I went out today and picked up this camera:

I got a 1 gig card with it too and it came up to around $420 CDN. Pretty damn good deal if you ask me. The pictures are AMAZING (from the little that I know of photos) and the video feature is out of this world. I remember when digital camera video was horrendous and the max was like 15 seconds without sound and a crappy frame rate. This small, little Canon produces video at 640x480 at 30fps (I know I've mentioned this before, but it really astounds me how good the quality is on this).

I have to read the manual, which is unfortunate as I was really reluctant to at first. I wanted to just play with the thing but it has so many options, I figure it'd be best to read it and learn from there.

Yes, I do want the portability to just slip it in a shirt pocket and today when I was in the store, it was down to the Casio slim one and this one. The extra little bit of body made me go for this one. It's still small, but it looks like a solid camera.

I'll post more when I start playing with it, maybe even some pictures too!
