Podium Mic for Graduation??

I was considering using a lav mic taped to somewhere on the podium for a high school graduation ceremony that I will be videotaping. Is this a bad idea? I was also considering purchasing a new mic (e.g., a cardioid?) for this application, if the lav mic is a bad idea. I will be sending the mic output to my dvx via a Sennheiser 100 setup, if this makes any difference. Any suggestions on a specific mic for this application most appreciated (or, can I use the lav without much problem?). Thanks.

I've taped wireless lavs to podium mics before with good results. Make sure to use black gaffer's tape or electrical tape to secure the lav to the underneath tip of the podium mic.

Another option would be to take a feed from an in-house audio mixer if available. For that, you need to make sure your cables can terminate in XLR, 1/4", or even RCA.

Is the output of the mix board most likely going to be line level, and do the mix boards usually have both a mono mix and stereo mix outputs? Thanks.

The signal should be line level. As for what outputs to expect, I'd say a mixed mono is most commonly available. It really comes down to what type of mixer they are using and what outputs are available that they aren't already using themselves.

Thanks Terry. I think you sold me on using my lav and not having to buy another mic.
