PLYWOOD SKATER Finished

There is a 10 inch refrence marker on the jpeg. When you blow it up, the marker should be exactly 10 inches. It may take a bit of trial and error, but I imagine the 8.5*11 tiffs will be up soon and should make it easier....

Shane, how did you secure the bogen quick release plate to the tilt plate?

Building this in couple of days, can't wait!

Hey DJ Lewis, thanks for the information.

What wheels are you going to use? I went to a skate store today and I found 64mm, 70mm, 78mm and 80mm wheels.

And what about the bearings? I found ABEC 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and a very expensive one called NMB.

Last one: how will you do that tilt thing?

greetins all.

I just uploaded the photos to Mark at desperatecomfort.com I'm sure he will post a link soon. I will email them to coffee as well but does Yahoo alow 1.9 meg files to be sent? Let me know.

As someone else is doing.. how many people are thinking of making this in plastic?

Thanks Justyn!

Plastic? The whole thing? I guess wood is easier, though a plastic-made can look more professional.

Which wheels did you use?

I haven't built one yet. Hoping for devine inspiration to strike and to until my buddy has a day off from work and I can use his friggin' tools. I'm also mildly retarded when it comes to building such things. However, I was pretty successful with my underwater housing until my VW van caught on fire and the front and back lexan melted.

I was thinking of possibly trying some lexan again on this thing. I got pretty good at cutting circles... I would sand with a belt sander and was pretty darn easy. Just have to get a jig saw with a variable speed, plastic blade, and a crapload of patience. I found the plastic at a place as scap and threw the guy 20 bucks for beers for "his boys" and that was it. I made 10 housings out of that stuff.

Hope to see some good designs.

Real size Skater plans available for download from my site here:

Thanks Justyn!

I told Justyn, I have recruited my step-dad, a gunsmith, to tackle this project. He's MUCH more precise about making things than I am. Plus he has a full shop with drill press, various precision saws, etc. I should have the pieces cut from him by next Monday or Tues.

I too had considered plastic, but am going with wood first.

Mark,

Thanks for doing that. That's awesome. Hope eveyone shares pics and video from what they shoot. I'm especially interested in the type of lens adapters you all might be buying. Also what do you all recommend in way of a rod system/ 35mm adapter/matt box? I'm going to start with just the rods and follow focus with possibly a matt box. Cash is Tiszite again.

Mark,

If you think it's a worthy project you might want to consider making some for people here. IF you got the hook up.. pimp it out.

Justyn,

Good job on thos TIFF files.

I promised you updates on the lens adapter, finishing the plywood skater finally gave me time to do some tests. Give me sometime on the DIY flo softbox.

All,

I'm inviting those who are interested in DIY lens adapters to checkout what I have in development. I posted a new thread, with test results and video samples.

Link to the thread.below

DIY Medium Format lens adapter for DVX

Feel free to improve on it. Please also inform me if I did something wrong with my setup.

Hope this also will help you guys.

When I open the pictures they appear to be a bit small, are these the actual size or should I adjust it to a specific size?

These are the tiffs I got from Justyn, as is. I didn't modify them at all. When I put together the base platform template it looked like the right size to me. I was actually surprised at how big the thing looked.

coffee,

there are vector files available. Corel Draw and adobe illustrator, do you prefer these? These are the sharpest and dimension accurate files which I personally used but small in file size so their easy to email. PM me your email and i'll send which ones you prefer.

To all,

I will add a small addition to the design based on the original product. I will indicated on the pattern the reference markings which when used with the original product angle calculator is your distance-0.0 & offset-0.0 point.

PM me those who are interested.

A simple brake device is currently tested. I will also post these as soon as I'm finished drilling and grinding my lens adapter.

or more conviniently, email

I believe they were exactly to scale. I just cut Teddy's full sized files and pasted them pixel for pixel on the page. I haven't checked but should be about right. I too thought it looked small, but then again.. that's what we want.

Also, I think i'm going to make an additional modification. I do a lot of skateboard videography and some bike trials and I think I might add a detachable push/pull arm for the front or back. I might have to do a seperate thing for this as tests will be in order. Might have to get big inflatable wheels.. but I'm inspired.... I also will be shooting this with my beat up GL1 so if it dumbs.. who cares it's just standard def now... LOl

Congrats all and I'm interested in everything Ted comes up with. What about buying the 15mm rods and camera support.. and Matt Box.. Now there would be a one stop shop for this.

Later ya'll

ah ok, I'm home now and printed them. They're the right size... cool

question though, on the diagram document (showing the assembly) there's a small blaxk square and above it looks like a wing nut... What's that whole section for? And, what exactly should I pick up to use for this black piece?

Thanks guys.

For a second there I thought if I did mess up the sizing that you could stamp me as completely fully retarded instead of just mildly.

Let me see somemore video. I do wonder though if this dolly skater will result in the everyone doing these moves for the sake of doing them.. Kind of like what would happen in film school after seeing Cape Fear where DeNiro walks up and smashes his face into the camera.. and then you see the back of his head and he walks out. Seems like regardless of the project, the director through that shot in to be a jackass.

Anyway... Let's see who can come up with the coolest stuff. Anyone going to do any greenscreen moves and composting? I think this is perfect for that stuff especially if you take the meta data of the moves on the dolly. Could be breathtaking in HD.

All of my pieces are cut. I bought a drill press (something I always wanted) to drill the holes in the wheel mounts so I'll be ready for test shots in a few days. Got alot of "life" things to do first.
