PLYWOOD SKATER Finished

Yes exactly like that. I finished a shoot a month agao and my crane guy's stuff all came from auto shops. he's the one that turned me on to the idea.

I'm not kidding.

Not that I doubt it, but I'm genuinely interested, what are some examples?

You mean they have marine supply versions of this:

With 5/8" studs and less than $113?

What else is there in the marine world, because I'm poor too?

what is this exactly...:embarasse

Justin, it's just an arm to hold things. Most of the time I see them used to hold and position an eternal monitor but you can use them for whatever you want. It's just a handy and flexible tool (that is often way over priced.)

So what would it be listed under at a marine or auto shop?

If anyone of you plans to print out the plan, please take note of the 10 inch scale I placed as reference above the base pattern so you can resample the image to actual size.

If I were to take those plans to a machine shop or a lumber yard, would they be able to build it, or is it specialized. I'm really effin stupid when it comes to this kind of stuff. :)

Slimothy

Nope, its not specialized. just make sure the guy has a steady hand in guiding the jigsaw on the lines traced on wood. Better yet, if you can find a shop that has a tool that can cut perfect circles, that'll great. You can have an idea how 'crude' our methods are here in the island by looking at the construction photos.

And also, an important note, make sure during the drilling for the holes for the axles, that your drill bit is really 90 degrees or perpendicular to the wheel mount, otherwise your wheels would wobble.

Best way to do this is use a post drill. The wheel mount is really the 'critical' item in this device.

Good luck.

Thank you teddybear,

Great work.

I'd still love to see some footage when you're up to it.

teddybear - Thanks for sharing the plans, this is AWESOME! I noticed that the P+S comes with a card which lists the degree of each wheel based on the distance from the objectt (http://www.pstechnik.de/en/skater-accessories-tables.php) - How are you setting the angles on your tracker? or are you just winging it?

rook - Nice find with the videos on pstechnik.de. At first I was on the same side of the fence as MDKfilms, but after watching the demo videos on P+S I can see a whole world of applications outside of just product shots!

MDK- what model Arri do they have on the skater in the video?
A R R I F L E X 4 3 5 - http://www.arri.com/prod/cam/tec_435.htm

I just finished the first prototype of a skater made from ideas from Teddy's drawings and stuff from my own head. I hate cutting circles!!!!
It works. I won't give it anymore credit than this. However, I did learn some stuff and tomorrow I will make a far nicer one and post pics of it and some footage.

This looks awesome. FYI on circular cutting. I bought a dremel type cutter a while back and it comes with a circular cutting device that make cutting custom sized holes very easy. Home Depot has a bunch of specialized tools for such things. I think the whole thing was about 50 bucks. I also got a special saw to cut through plexiglass and PVC and would probably thing about making this out of the Lexan plexiglass. Would be great to have the whole thing see through. I get it really cheap as scrap peices.

I have a music video shoot that this would be great on. Is it a huge effort to construct? I'd be inclined to buy over build as well.

Footage Finally

I put together a sample last night.

The first video is of the Plywood skater and its parts, and I mounted another DIY I made, the DVXDOF120 and a DVX100A.

Plywood Skater Video

The second is sample footage. This video is shot with the DVX100A only. NO lens adapter.

Sample footage

Both files are mpg videoCD format so media player could play them.

Thanks to www.stickypod.com for allowing dvxusers to post their videos.
