Ply 35mm Adaptor!

Well, i dived into the adaptor game and tried to build some static adaptors. Too much grain and always finding dirt on the GG. So i finally decided to go with the spinning cd style. Origionally i wanted to make it from 4 plates with 4 bolts going through them so that i could adjust everything like back focus and move the macros back and forward to where it looked best, but i got lazy and just used 2 plates. I had nothing around to cut up so i used some 11mm Ply wood.

Here are the pics before i cover the sides and some before and after the black spray job...

Looking back i should have not put the batteries so close to the middle.

i found some nikon close ups and the local hospice for R10 each (about $1.50)
bargain. The fat tube is packaging card roll from a gyro.

nice idea.. If you're decent with woodworking (and it seems you are) then you could even build additional wood parts that slide over the bolts so that light cant get in.. Kinda make a plywood sandwich.. from there you could use an enamel paint.. kinda like what they use on guitars..

Thats a cool idea, but seems like a bit of a mission for me. I was thinking of either using aluminium or perspex and cutting a long 40mm wide strip and sort of wrapping it all the way around... Its wired, never thought of myself as a wood worker :) But come to think of it, i would be so stoked to re-sand the outside and varnish it off the look like the interior of an old Jaguar!!!
We'll see what happens.

Hoping to get this thing done by the time time mars comes really close. I got given a 220mm and a doubler, so might have some really wierd test footage.

Well, I was about to post the footage when i remembered people talking about how good scotch magic tape would be if you could get it in wider rolls. So off i went to the store and bought 2 brands of "magic tape" And put it accross a blank disc that i hadn't yet sanded. Holy **** i just gained 2 stops of light in 1 easy step!!!
New test footage coming soon. i just found a 28mm and a 135mm at the local salvation army store... SCORE!

Ok, bad news, the damn tape is just to thin, getting a damn hot spot right in the middle... I'm going to shoot a bmx contest tomorrow so i'll give the adaptor a run for its money (about $15). Super excited to shoot with my 28mm lens!

Here are about a million photos of it during set up with all its add ons and extra bits!!!

Looks great! Can't wait to see the footage. I've got this box half built now - still experimenting.

What exactly did you use for your lense setup on the camera side (achromat)?

What type of monitor is that - made for on-camera or another thrift store find? I'm still looking for a DIY that is that thin. Thanks!

For achromats, i used 2 cheap magnifying glasses chopped the handles off and they ended up exactly the same size as the outside of the bayonet mount, which is where the cardboard bit slides over, so they were perfect and a cheap closeup filter about 53mm thread on closest to the disc. I think the closeup is overkill though.
The monitor is one of those cheap and nasty (sansui) dashboard car screens for all the guys into mad car entertainment. The vertical resolution is ok but the horizontal is absolute KAK! Not really much use for checking focus, but it's hundreds to operate through.

I shot some stuff with the whole setup at a BMX contest this weekend and the stuff came out SO DAMN GOOD!!! i'm so stoked and excited to use it for my hallows fest shoot!

I'll post a link to the video when it goes online today and i'll post some high res footy when i get a chance. But this thing works a treat.

Before we get carried away, i'd just like to say that i am not a focus puller, and do not have a focus puller!

Ok, here is the thing that i shot on Saturday. There are a few shots with the adaptor. No prizes for guessing. But the opening shot of the guy introducing the event is with adaptor + 28mm and so is the beginning of the medic talking. And then a couple shot throughout. And yes my tracking stuff is SUPER shaky.

Enjoy...

That 28mm is a pain in the ass, big hotspot/vignette? but my 70-200 works an absolute treat.
