Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

I want to shoot in 24PA, edit in 24p timeline, and burn native 24p dvd. As I understand it, following Sony whitepaper accomplishes all this. However, I want to view in native 24p as well, which I cannot do since the dvd player must convert to 60i for my ntsc tv (adds 2:3 pulldown). I want to purchase a 16:9 aspect ratio tv (crt please, cannot afford the plasma or lcd) to view in native 24p. I notice Sony has crt tvs at Best Buy that claim "2,3 pulldown" and something like "cine-like look/pulldown removal". My question: can anyone out there recommend at 16:9 crt tv set that does what I would like? Does it exist? Does anyone know whether the Sony tv I describe above will do it? Many thanks in advance.

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

Well, if it's a progressive display, it *should* do that, whether it's a CRT or plasma or LCD or RP. If it can display 480p, you should be able to watch it the way you want -- IF you also have a progressive-scan DVD player set up accordingly.

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

Isn't it true that most "modern" dvd players (mine is a Sony a year or two old) will play progressive if the content is progressive (e.g., 24p) unless it is playing into a non progressive devide (ntsc 60i tv)? How would the dvd player "know" that is was playing into a progressive device and therefore play without adding 2,3 pulldown?

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

A two year-old Sony is not a slam dunk to be a progressive-scan player.  Check your manual.

As for how it knows, you set it for progressive output.

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

OK, so it would be a hardware switch of some type on the dvd player? I was thinking that the progressive tv set might detect the progressive output of the dvd player somehow??

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

..its useally a software switch in the setup menu for the DVD player. or sometimes theres a button right on the remote to switch between progressive and interlaced display. ive never encountered a hardware switch. if its a progressive player, the dvd player outputs the type of signal you tell it to .. progressive or interlaced. generally they come set to interlaced as factory since few people actually have progressive displays. if your going to run it to a progressive display and want it to output progressive you just need to change i in the setup menu or with the remote or whatever.

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

So there are tv's out there that can switch between interlaced and progressive scan, like the Sony I mention above? Anyone out there have any experience with any of these. I may buy one this weekend. Thanks much in advance.

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

My player has both a hardware switch and a software switch. (Why? Who knows? Who . . . cares?)

My HDTV (RP) displays both progressive and interlaced. There’s really not much to tell. It automatically detects the signal and displays accordingly.

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

..it has a hardware switch for interlaced/progressive? . well there ya go, they do exist! mine has a remote button and a menu setting. the remote button is a bad idea though. its a button you accidentally hit and your dislpay changes to "ant wars" and it take a couple minutes to figure out you accidentally hit that stupid button.

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

Yeah; there’s a slider switch on the back. But you can also switch from the remote. It was one of the early progressive players, but it’s still one of the most feature-rich I’ve seen.

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

Best Buy is including a "free" Samsung dvd player if you purchase the Sony 16:9 crt tv that plays progressive and interlaced. This dvd player supposedly uprezzes SD to HD. Anyone have any experience with this? I must be living in dark ages; I thought that only the lcd and plasma tv displays were being marketed with progressive playback, and a dvd that uprezzes is completely news to me.

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

You can watch native 24p content at a true 24p frame rate when you watch a DVD on a computer DVD player...

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

I read my Sony progressive dvd player manual, and when in progressive mode it appears that it outputs 60 frames per sec (progressively) by taking the 1 - 24 ( 24p) input frames from the dvd and outputting as 1,1,2,2,2,3,3,4,4,4,......24,24,24. Will this will still "look" like native 24p since the repetitions will just appear as a single frame of each of the 24 input frames (except their display times will vary somewhat from true 24p due to 2,3,2,3 pattern)??

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

What you're describing is 2:3 pulldown. It's how all film on NTSC video looks, so yes it'll look as much like "native 24p" as any film on video.

Re: Pls Help with Native 24P Viewing Question

From the description in the dvd manual, the outputted frames are not interlaced, they are just output identically twice (or three times) progressively. So when playing on a progressive scan tv there should be no judder frames. Is this still considered "NTSC" video when not interlaced (and still considered 2:3 pulldown)?
