Pls help, budget is not a problem

Dear forum friends,

Just joint an international company that have nothing to do with video production.
The owners realised that there is plenty to do in this field that will be as a benefit for the company.
My missions is to build a 2 man team that will run around the world and then edit the stuff.
90% of the current work is internal and 10% might find its way to T.V
Coming from the broadcast world when sometimes buying a filter is a long bureaucratic procedure I am thrilled with the freedom I have to choose and buy what ever is relevant for work.
Believe it or not,I find it very hard deciding between the DVCPRO50 format and DV (can't give up 25p).
The Dvcpro50 is superior professional format, but lack the mobility (I will have to travel a lot) and support that DV have.No tape less recording,(pls no P2) and no windows native laptop editing (like FCP have). With such a pro camera I might even need permission filming in some places around the world.(all this limitation are history in DV).
The DVX100AE,well, we all know what an amazing camera it is,but still for some type of my work it will be to small in size (I am talking impression wise),and the other problems are a very poor viewfinder and a limited lens (comparing to a pro one).
The solution might be (god forgive me...) the XL2,body only with a pro lens/viewfinder and a firestore3 on the back.
In purpose I leave the creative side aside and I am talking about format and equipment only.
So here I am with a nice budget and a lot of dilemma...

Any comment will be welcome.

Thanks!
Johnnie

Sure sounds like a nice dilemma  ;D.  In your position, i'd be very tempted to go with the Panasonic AJ-SDX900E PAL.  It has the 25p option, and while it's heavier than the DVX100, it's still portable.  You get those nice 2/3" chips and interchangeable lenses--and a nice big step up in quality. What do you need the tapeless system for--you've got a flunky to handle the transfers. Also, do you really need to be editing while you travel? More likely, you'll be shooting in the field and returning home to your swanky edit suite.

Otherwise, I'd stick with the DVX100 PAL.  I'm not sure what the XL-2 would do for you.  Interchangeable lenses, yes, but will you need to be wide or long mostly?  Unless you need long lenses, the XL-2 probably won't offer a clear advantage.  If you want to make the DVX100 more impressive, buy a top of the line matte box with flags and some other goodies--I guarantee no one will mistake you for an amateur.  The DVX has the superior viewfinder configuration with the big flip-out LCD and EVF.  Anyway, I'd get the SDX-900 and not look back. :)

Thanks Barry,
The AJ-SDX900E is indeed the camera I was referring too.
Its is a great one,but the DVCPRO50 as a format still leg behind in the windows world.
Tapeless editing will cut editing time sharply and when being in hotels or flying, laptop rough cut editing looks a good solution.
Make no mistake I LOVE the 100AE,but it does look like a canon pro manual lens and Ikegami pro viewfinder might make a different.

Thanks again!!

J.

Re: Pls help, budget is not a problem

i can say for sure the xl2 is your camera.
i too  HATE the viewfinder on the dvx, and impression-wise the xl2 is badass. if you need interchangable lens, go for the xl2.
since money isnt a concern, buy a direct to disk recorder if you need to.

Re: Pls help, budget is not a problem

Hi Michael,
Wish Panasonic had a video camera like the DVC 200 with 25p.
Since there is nothing like that in the market, my best bat indeed looks like a modified (pro lens/viewfinder) XL2.

Thanks
Johnnie
