Please: Opinions On Audio Package

They Live

Well-known member
Hey, I'm putting together a new audio package for the production company I work for. Please let me know what you think. I'll include the total (I'm under budget) at the end. We're covered on wireless already. Thanks.

Outdoor/Shotgun
AT-4073
Indoor/Hyper
AKG C480 CK63
Mixer
Sound Devices 302
Boom Pole
K-Tek K-102CCR Graphite Fiber Boom Pole with internal cable, side exit

Assorted cables, rip ties, sound blankets, tape, etc.
Wind protection (Blimp, BBG, Jammers)
K-Tek KSM Shockmount
Pelican 1600 and 1510 for storage/transportation

Total as of right now, about $5,300.00. Again, we're covered on wireless & lav needs.

Would a wireless adapter be worthwhile for the boom mics?

We're also considering a wireless headphone system (2 headphones) for monitoring. Any suggestions?

I choose the AT-4073 for our shotgun (although we could spend more) b/c of the positive reviews I've read about it. Is there really that significant of a difference between that and a higher end shotgun, i.e. $1000 range? And, if we did go higher end, how much less forgiving are those mics as far as pick up pattern?

PS: This will be used for reenactments (i.e. shorts) for broadcast TV.

Any other suggestions, advice, tips, critiques, thoughts, etc. more than welcome. Thanks guys.

if you buy the akg in states you can pick up the mbho instead for the price of the akg you have extra cardioid and swivel joint
the 4073 is a good mic , no need for something better as a start
wierless adaptor - depends what brand , the sennheiser make the mics sound like crap , the lectro is about 2 grand with 401 reciever sounds terrific .
if you need it , it more depends on the shotes and comfort , if you are going do a lot of steadicam so yes , if you dont like pull long cables so yes , if you can live without so no :-)
by the way you can pick up phantom power supply and make your regular transmitter accept condenser mics .
take a bigger bag then you really need , you will discover you will like to place there more crap with the time .
ifb - buy 2 aditional g-2 systems , they can work as wierless or ifb with cheap cans which have adjustable sound level potentiometer on its wire - good enoth .
dont like the ksm mount - buy complete k-teck zeppelin with k-gps and aditional mount for short mic - you dont know when you will need the secend boom .
internal cable - i dont like it , if you doing drama and not hard news you can live without ., better buy longer pool or even 2
bbg - is a waste of money if you intend work with the hyper interiors only

A couple of things:

For wireless monitoring, look at ListenTech. They're significantly less expensive than Comtek, and they are tunable (no need to change chips etc, like with Comtek).

For cases, you might want to look at the Portabrace vault series. Very similar to Pelican at about 1/3 less the cost.

You may also want to look at Trew's consighment section. They just posted 4 Sennheiser 416T's for $700 each (probably can negotiate down some). So for about $100 more, you can get a better mic.

For wireless boom, don't bother unless you get a Lectro 400 series (at a minimum, better still is Zaxcom).

Are you going to be working out of a bag or on a cart. If bag, then you need a bag - the Petrols are great.

That's it for now...

it would do the same , it will cost you less then half , it will make my day that the f... robbing barons would get less money . not to mention you are buying usa product , where is your pride ? :-)
for the smae mony the f,, babyball cost you you can buy another short k-tek zeppeline ( 32 cm long ) and with Manfred small right angle i think you will be able to place the AT as well in that one .
check the mbho mics - the 603+hyper and cardioid + swivel cost about 1150 usd , worth every peny .

.

Classic. Thanks.

Don't forget the full harness to go with the Petrol bag - saves your back big time. Don't bag without it! ;-)

I would recommend either getting the shotgun capsule for the AKG 480 or saving some funds by dropping to the AKG Se300b CK93. MattinSTL said that the difference between the ck63/ck93 capsules is almost zilch, so on that I bought the CK93 and it sounds great, even when mixed in the same movie as my MKH60.

I would also consider the schoeps cmc6u with mk41 as a hyper. It doesn't necessarily sound any better, but it can help you get work if people want "name brand". I have been suprised how much more work I have been getting (doing a good job helps too).

if someone state such athing that he wants schoeps i will defenetly suspect he is complete ass hole , still dint find anyone who can indificate what good mic i used .
for dialog any good hyper would do the same and by the way i know more people who dont use schoepses for living since they carry senns , neumans , akg and mbho .
to buy schoeps for dialog its a trew waist of money .
by the way i know only one producer that check my mics as he also collect them , oll the others dont even look if i have one in the end of the pool :-)

The people don't ask for Schoeps, they just ask what you have and if you say name brands, they (who may or may not know anything about sound) are slightly more likely to think you know what you are doing. It is just my experience here in Seattle. It doesn't make it right.

I do love my Schoeps though and I know there are others here that love theirs too!

ok so pull the oktava and put schoeps logo over -:-)
sorry ,people i work with dont ask anything , just about my rate
as more i ask they more apritiate my work :-)
