I'm searching for a HD video camera, maybe a Sony AVCHD NEXCAM. I downloaded a .mts file to see if FCPX would work with it and found out it will not open it. I have been shooting with Nikon D7000's and my trusty DVX100a. I want to stay with FCPX, any recommendations ?

Depends on the precise camera but generally speaking there's either a Sony utility or you need to have the entire card structure in order to import. Individual MTS files are not directly supported. Sony cameras in general enjoy broad support in X.

You really need a card image to test against, not an MTS file on it's own. Check the forums that specially address that camera and ask any users if they use FCPX. That will well you all you need to know.

What camera recomendations can you give me in the 3500. price point. I like the ergonomics of the sony nex-ea50uh but the canon xf100 costs less and has 422 color space and 50mbs recording. Of course I want the most bang for the buck. My DVX100a
has been a great camera, my next one can only hope to last so long and be so dependable.

I'm slightly biased I'm afraid, so my recommendations may be worth zero.

We bought a couple of XF100s around 20 months ago for general filming. When it came time to buy another camera we were happy enough with the XF100 that we bought another one. That's the first camera I've ever had that I've bought again 14 months later. So we now have three XF100s in addition to our other cameras. I do like the 50mb 4:2:2 on to compact flash cards. We use Transcend 32GB 400x cards in them without any problems at all - and we have lots of them!

If I had one complaint about the XF100 it would be the switch that toggles the front ring between zoom, focus ands iris. We have the Iris reassigned to the wheel at the lower front, so that's very easy to use all the time. I don't zoom at all while filming, but for re-framing I'll use the zoom rocker and the back and then use the front ring for focus. The frustration comes when my son (who works with us filming) uses it, he likes to have the front ring for zoom, so generally switches it to the zoom function, so I end up zooming instead of focusing next time.

After that, it all seems to work well.

SO many cameras! But I too have a Canon XF100. I love that camera! Small and does not draw huge crowds. But packed with nice features and has a great codec.

It really does depend on what type of work you shoot or plan on doing with the camera. That part is more important than matching a camera to an NLE.

Also the Blackmagic Camera- if you can find one- is around that price and shoots straight to ProRes with lots of FCP X metadata baked in. Very useful.

Thank you for the advise. I called B&H and they recommended the Sony NEX5U. I have mixed feelings about it so far. Very well built. Works well. It is hard to spend that kind of money and get two year old technology. Something tells me a new release is just around the corner. I have found posts from last year talking about the same thing. FCP X is working well with the files on my almost 5 year old MBP 17". The camera reminds me a lot of my DVX100a. This made me feel very comfortable with it quickly. Focus is FAST!!!!.

Blackmagic. Its in your price range and selling for that from people with them in their hands now. $3500-$3600 is the going price on BMCUser. Shoots raw and ProRes 422. Very fast editing on my MBP. I'd go to BMCUser.com and see what people are doing with it. Its strange because of the new site there is almost no talk of it over here.
