If a shotgun microphone does not say stero on it does
that mean it only records in mono? I am looking at buying
a directional mic. pick up pattern expressed in degree angle
but I don't want mono sound.
 
There are relatively few stereo mics. And probably even fewer good ones.

If you want stereo, use two mics, positioned carefully. A "stereo" mic like the one built into the DVX is really more of a binaural mic, as far as I'm concerned. Likewise any other one that has stereo elements right next to each other.

Just so you're clear on this, too: the two channels in the DVX are two mono channels, not two stereo channels.
