Please help

Hey everyone

Sorry for posting again so soon about the same thing but I still haven't gotten enough information to help with my decision. I also feel that i wasn't specific enough on what I need so here is my situation.

I have a wedding to shoot in less than a month and need a lavalier microphone to attach to either the groom, bride, or priest. My problem is that I am new to audio and know NOTHING about microphones. So I really need some suggestions simply on which BRAND to buy and links would help too. Also I have no idea what minimum lavalier setup I need to run from my HVX200 to the person. What i mean is, that when i search online for lavaliers some come with a big box looking thing that says its a receiver and others come with just two small looking boxes that I assume u attach to the camera and then also the person. Simply put, I need one lavalier mic to attach from my HVX200 to a person. I need it to pick up all 3 people in the wedding ceremony. Im not looking for movie quality audio I just need something to clearly pick up the priest, bride, and groom. So if anyone could please let me know exactly what bare minimum I need in terms of accessories to attach from my hvx to the person that would be amazing help. My budget is at the most $500.00 but the less the better. Like i said all i need is a strong signal from camera to person, not filmmaking quality audio. Thanks for any help and i hope i didn't leave anything out this time lol.

Here is a list of brands that I found to have prices in my budget:
Samson
Sennheiser
Azden
Audio-Technica

Whether or not they are good brands unfortunately i don't know.

PS: I have no idea the range of 1 lavalier mic and am assuming unless told otherwise that one lavalier will clearly pick up all 3, the groom, bride, and priest during the ceremony. thanks again.

I thought we gave you some brand ideas what not... You will need 4 things - Lav Mic that hooks up to the transmitter(box), that signal goes over wirelessly to your receiver(box) which has a cable out to your XLRs.

You can put the mic lower on the subject, which makes it more equidistant to other mouths close by - but all 3 people would have to be pretty close. You will have to boost the signal giving you more room for noise and picking up other things.

You are risking not getting the other 2 people, or at least as loud. So you may need to try and boost it in post...

Are they using any church mics to project to audience? If so you can plug into the board or run a mic near a speaker...

thanks for the reply mad. those are good tips for when using one lav. might have to get 2 instead now though. but what i still need are suggestions on an actual brand and lavalier. right now im looking at the sennheiser or samson brands. Any input on these or suggestions on a model lav from them?

Of the brands you have listed the only one I would feel comfortable recommending is Sennheiser. I have heard too many negative things about the other brands.

Personally, I use wireless systems produced by Lectrosonics.

Sennheiser G3 is the lowest-price decent wireless microphone series. Anything less than that is a disposable, cheap, plastic, fiddly, unreliable toy that will bite you in the backside.

PS: Your subject line is particularly unhelpful. Everyone who comes here posting a question is asking "Please Help".
PPS: Any request for equipment recommendations should contain a budgetary amount. Else might as well not ask.
PPPS: There is another forum here dedicated to audio topics. You would likely get much better response there.

Thanks everyone for replying. It has helped a lot. I think im gonna go with the sennheiser then. Now I just have to figure out the exact lavalier i need to buy from them. Any suggestions or links to a sennnheiser lavalier would be awsome. Richard thanks for taking the time to reply again. I did post here as well as the audio section. I was just trying to make sure that i got a response asap. Thats how desperate i am on this and crunched on time. Thanks again everyone and any other input is welcome.

Most wireless kits come WITH a microphone (including the Sennheiser G3). It is quite good enough to get you started. You can always replace the microphone with a better brand/model at some future time when you have the need and the budget.
