Please help!

I used a radio shack cable in a pinch,.. I missing my XLR cable at an off site, make shift, VO session,.. radio shack was the nearest option while the client waited,... it sucked. $25 for a crap cable. But like you said,.. it worked.

If I need a special length (short) cables I solder them myself with Neutriks. Are these Petrusha(TM) cables any good?

Anyhow, all of us should have a cheap soldering station, some tin and make a couple of cables themselves. Just to know what a cable is. I make mine color coded, mic cables come in yellow, red, blue, grey, black etc. Camera mic cable 42 cm is blue, mixer-recorder jump cables 30 cm yellow, Zeppelin cable with angle connetor in mic end is red etc, easy to find from the cables box. Besides this is almost the only DIY thing left in audio... And, some combinations are sometimes hard to find like XLR to miniplug or RCA etc, but easy to make yourself, or modify an existing one.

Actually, the biggest problem that occurs with most cables involves the connectors, not the cable itself. Neutrik and Switchcraft connectors (in that order) are the best and most reliable; I wouldn't use cables made with anything else.

That statement is right on the money! Neutrik plugs are damn fresh and that's what I use as Canare is just a little pricey :(
