i finally got my dvx today so naturally i went out and shot some test footage. i shot most everything in squeeze mode. when i go to capture, on final cut pro 4, the footage shows up squeezed on my tv monitor. i have tried selecting 16:9 anamorphic in capture settings, ive tried regular capture with a 16:9 sequence, ive tried 16:9 capture with a 16:9 sequence. what in the world am i doing wrong!?!? every time i capture something, it says it needs to be rendered when i put it on the timeline. i had thought that this happens when sequence and timeline settings dont match...perhaps im wrong or just doing something wrong? what settings do i use to capture squeeze mode and have it show up letter boxed on my tv monitor? i shouldnt have to render it should i? if so then it would seem that checking the anamorphic box would be useless. please help.

thanks a lot,
adam

is there no way that final cut will letterbox it so i can edit the anamorphic footage in the right aspect ratio? my friend said that he has it set up to work this way on his computer, and his tv monitor is nearly identical to mine.

If you put anamorphic clips in a 4:3 timeline final cut will automatically squeeze and letterbox it for you. You'll have to render though

I am pretty sure that is what I did for my last project... I remember having to do some ultra rendering. I will have to check my settings and figure out what the deal was.

BTW, I am the friend Adam E is talking about.

if an anamorphic clip is put on 4:3 timeline and rendered so it will display letterboxed, does it retain its original anamorphic properties or is it just essentially the same as shooting 4:3 letterbox in the first place?

thanks

If you letterbox it in FCP you're essentially throwing away the whole point of shooting Squeeze mode not to mention losing a generation to rendering again. If you aren't going to edit anamorphic you should just shoot letterbox and save the re-rendering time.
