I am shooting an independent film, it is a low budget project and I am interested in building my own soft boxes and reflectors, does anybody know how to make either of these professionally but on the other hand inexpensive. The project is going to be shot in black and white, so I need to make sure my whites are not too much over saturated.
I know the basis of building a cheap reflector and soft boxes, but I would like to know other people's input.

Any help is appreciated
Thank you very much

Reflectors were one of the greatest "real item" purchases I made. After a while I just got tired of trying to make do with DIY stuff.

HOWEVER -- one thing I used to play around with were sunshades for cars. There is the kind that folds up accordian style that usually has highly reflective silver on at least one side, and ther are the circular disc ones that twist small for storage. If you can find white ones they can come in handy for a bit of bounce if you get them close enough to the subject.

There's also white foamcore available at most craft stores. Also try getting duct tape (the real stuff that is silver and reflective) and covering one side of the foamcore with that.

Another cheap alternative.. Frosted shower curtain liners..2-4 bucks at the hardware store. Hang one of these from a couple of light stands. Put a light..or two, aprox 2-3 feet back from the surface of the shower curtain....Instant , large softbox. Just watch that your lights don't spill off the sides, unless you want them to.

this is the directors forum.... this should be moved out to the cinematography section.
