Please help me with my tripod (Pictures inside)

Here's the deal. I've had this tripod, and its been broken since last summer and its pretty much prevented me from doing any serious production work.

I took it to a camera shop place but they could not fix it (for cheap) and they recommended that I buy a new center colum (which was like 115 - 145) from bogen. Its a 755B legs with a 501 head, pictured below:

What happened was I believe I screwed the bottom adjustment (that locks the head in place with the center column) too much and it no longer locks, and the head came off the center column and won't go back on - the screw adjustment no longer does anything and the center column is virtually useless (won't screw into the ball head.)

Here is a closer picture of the center column.

It appears that I need the center piece to come up about a centimeter for it to screw in properly.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do for a quick-fix? I would really like it if I could just mount the head on the current unit (without damaging it) until I gather the funds to buy a new center column.

Thanks!
