Please help me make a decision on a 85mm lens!

I have Redrock and HMC150. I have both Nikon and Canon FD mount. It's time to get a 85mm lens.

Which one should I get?! Canon FD 85mm 1.2 or Nikon 85mm 1.4?

I would love to get Nikon 1.2 but such thing doesn't exist. Eventually Nikon will release 85mm 1.2 for probably $2000 and I'm not gonna get it.

Should I just stick with Canon 1.2?

Has anyone used Nikon 85mm 1.4 at night or low light situation?

Thanks abunch. :Drogar-Shock(DBG):

I'm using a Nikon 85 1.4 with my HPX170 and a Cinemek G35.

The Nikon 85 is a GREAT looking lens that offers a very "creamy" looking bokeh - especially with the G35. I've also seen lots of great looking examples using the Redrock too.

Either way - trying to achieve a low light look or very little light / no practical way to light it - you're gonna need light. Lots of it.

You also may want to take a look at the Samyang/Vivitar 85mm f/1.4 lens. I have it, and it is brilliant. Not too hard on the wallet either.

The Nikon will fit on on your adapter. It will fit a Nikon film camera body, it will fit a Nikon digitial camera body, you can use it on a Canon 5D/7D/550D with an adapter.

The old Canon glass is a dead end street. And the reason I dropped Canon many years ago.

I have the Nikon 85 f1.8. Fine lens. The 1.4 is considerably bigger and more expensive for less than one-whole aperture opening.

I didn't see where you mention a budget but I just laid hands on a Zeiss and now understand why it gets such favorable reviews. All metal (as best as I can tell) and the focus throw is considerably greater than that of my Nikon, which is helpful when working with follow focus. Whether it's worth the price premium is up to you.

I'd stick with the Nikon mount.
