Please help me inspect this mic

mkh60dent.jpgOkay, so I recently bought an MKH60 off eBay for less than $800, I was thrilled. The guy sent it packaged well and unwrapping it I can see the mic looks brand new (no scratches, etc.) then I see a noticeable dent in the top grill. I hooked up the mic to my SD302 and did some testing and it seems fine but I don't have trained ears to hear problems. Please see the pictures, will this effect my audio of this mic at all? Thanks a bunch.

Honestly I wouldn't sweat it. I'm sure it's at least 99.999% fine. For the price you paid I would consider it the "scratch 'n dent" deal of the year.

I would be thrilled with that purchase.

See if this makes you feel any better:

Buying pro gear is a good investment... and you can try (as I do) to keep everything looking brand new... but be prepared for your gear to start showing age if you find yourself in professional situations. The dent on the front of the grill won't affect the sound in any measurable way... as long as the area along the length of the interference tube doesn't have any dents you're fine.

I realize that a scratched mic isn't the same as a dented one... but the more pro work I do the less I worry about the appearance of my gear because I've never seen a seasoned pro that doesn't have "seasoned" gear :).

You got a killer deal... enjoy that mic.

Shawneous,

If you are still concerned, send it in to Sennheiser for a checkup. It will probably cost you about $50 including shipping, but it may be worth it from a peace of mind standpoint. I did that with my $450 416, and they fixed a minor thing and I have a great mic now.

That pic is great Matt. Top little piece of equipment.
Thanks... I just wanted to ease the mind a little.

In the pro world they use what works... PERIOD. Nobody is looking at the gear's condition as long as it does the job. I'd say that less then perfect gear actually gives you street cred. So imagine pairing that mic up with this rig! This pic was taken the same night :)

It's kind of funny seeing this rig and that gun doing the same flick isn't it? Bottom line is that pros use what works... I want everybody to outgrow the feeling of collecting gear instead of accumulating gear to use!

Hey Matt, you're pics aren't showing... They were the other day, but now when it goes to load them when the page loads my browser is asking for a username/password.

Sorry... I'll try to fix it... some "buddy" of mine was reworking my website and just left it a total freakin' mess.

I wanted to take away his open password to the whole site and now ipowerweb has my site all f'ed up... they wouldn't accept the password... now it won't accept the new OR the old one.

Been gone a couple days... just got back... I'll take care of it.
