Please Help! I've read as much as I can to no avail H4N

I have an H4N, and here are the problems I am having with it.

- I can't independently adjust the levels on channels 1 and 2 in stereo mode - is there any way to fix this?

- If not, what do you recommend?

- How can I record 23.9 in the track?

- What sample and bit rate does the H4N record in MTR mode? Can I record 48K 24bit?

I am about to throw the F*#king thing out the window and I know I'm gonna get some smart a** telling me to use the search engine, but please don't.

I need help not criticism, I'd help you if you needed it.

Thanks,
Truthrocket

1) I don't believe it's possible to have independent volume control in stereo mode.
2) Use a field mixer*
3) Use a different recorder? While the h4n and it's compatriots get a lot of press here, they're very basic little recorders. Good for the price, but lacking pro features.
4) MTR mode is limited to 44.1/16bit

* Try the search function, there's tons of mixer talk here (Sorry, couldn't resist)

I don't think it works that way. So since you didn't check that out before you bought if you really need that function you would need to buy a mixer.

Do you really need it? if so see above.

- How can I record 23.9 in the track?

23.98 is a TC frame rate and has nothing to do with the audio. The Zoom does not record TC so it's a NA question. If you NEED TC then you have to spring for a recorder more in the $1K - $30K range.
But the good news is you don't need TC, you just need someone to slate take. And they NEED to do that anyway.

Yes you can recoed in 48/24, and you should. RTFM.

Search sometimes isn't as helpful as folks like to think. But the manual is. It comes with one. Usually skimpy and not as useful as it could be but it would have answered most of your questions. Hence RTFM.

Good I often do.

So then how do I record 48/24 in MTR mode?

Sorry I was thinking stereo. Don't know about MTR. Though I can not for the life of me think of a good use of the MTR mode on a film set.

But lets get real here. You bought the Smart car of recorders. It's small, it's cute, and it does what it does well enough - and it's cheap (in Europe the Smart car is cheap - somehow in the US we managed to slash the mileage in half and double the price at the same time?). You are not going to place in the indi 500 and your not going to get your soccer teem in the back. You payed less than any decent mic for a recorder with a stereo pair thrown in. For the $ it's a fantastic deal. But if you NEED to carry around the soccer team or have any chance in the 500 you bought the wrong thing. In that case what you need is going to cost a lot more $. And it's not like there is no info on this box. Research first cash second will translate to a better over all life experience. I've tried the reverse and it stinks.

Yep, it sounds like you needed to do some more research before buying, like having these questions before you pulled the trigger. The Zoom is a great little recorder for what it does, and I've married it up to a SD MixPre which works great. But as to your other questions, either RTFM or go to the Zoom site...your manuals are found here...

You may want to check out the Edirol or Sound Devices recording units, sounds like you need to save your shekels to get something like one of those for your requirements.

As they say, requirements first, purchases second...

best of luck
