Im trying to burn a feature length film on to a dvd.

Only problem the dvd holds 4.7gigs

the file is over 20gigs

is there a different way to export the video out of FCP or anyway to make
this work ?

please help

It's not so easy to author a dvd like that. A much bigger job than you suspect.

I'm not an FCP user but all these programs have the same concepts. You have to render out to an MPEG2 file first, not AVI. That MPEG2 will have to be compressed using the proper values and bit rates to the necessary 4.3gb to 4.5gb file size (or thereabouts). It can be pretty complicated sometimes figuring out what compression level to use and all the options for audio encoding that are available. If FCP doesn't have an MPEG2 render output then you need to render to AVI and use something like the PC platform has in TMPGENC (an MPEG2 encoder available for your mac) to convert your AVI to MPEG2. You're still not finished though...

Then you need a DVD authoring program like DVDLab, DVD Architect, Tmpgenc DVD Author, etc. I don't know the authoring programs on Macs--you'll have to find one. The function of the authoring program is to take an MPEG2 thats been properly compressed and allow you to add chapter points, menus, etc. It produces another encapsulation structure around the original video mpeg2 to make it usable on a DVD. It's the final finish to allow you to produce an image file of the proper size and formatting that you can burn onto a DVD.

Nathan - You'll want to use Compressor (or Export via Compressor) in FCP to make the DVD file (an MPEG-2, split into separate video and audio files).

A feature-length film probably won't fit on a single-layer, 4.7Gb DVD. Those hold roughly an hour.

are you using Idvd ot dvd studo pro? if you're using idvd, its simple file size does not matter, its about how long the .mov file is, drop it in, and it will compress to mpeg2 for you, and it looks pretty good.

...if its a 20gb file, idvd's auto compression will make it look like turds. and that's finding from personal exerience.

Burn to dual-layer, then your have at least 8.5 gb to work with, and I suggest using sorenson squeeze, we use it at work when we are compressing several episodes of a show on to one dvd.

on a side note, most of the time people will answer your question within a day.... but don't get ancy after 6 mins of the post being up. haha

Some information is missing.

Is the 20GB file an uncompressed avi file?

It it is, then 20GB should be a less than 2-hour film. Such a length will fit on a 4.7GB DVD, but you will need to go through several stages and use several programs.

1) avi to mpeg-2 conversion. You can use Procoder-2, Sorenson Squeeze or TMPG Express.

2) mpeg-2 to DVD-files conversion. You will need an authoring program, like TMPGEnc DVD or DVDLab pro. You may need some bitrate adjustment here.

3) DVD burning. This program will burn the disc. TMPGEnc has a burner which is quite good, as long as your DVD-file is up to 4.7GB. If it's a bit larger you may try CloneDVD2.

But there's another road, which may not get you as much quality or control as above, but it's simpler. Use a program called ConvertXtoDVD, which will take the avi file and get a burned disk at the end of a 2-hour processing. You have a trial period for it.
