Please guide me with Quicktime settings

AAAHHHHH!! I'm losing my mind over this. I'm just trying to host a great looking demo of my acting work on my web site. I render to Quicktime using Vegas 5. The reel is only 6 minutes and I've tried 256 and 512 settings. The 512 looks great but the file is 24 mb and takes forever for people to download. I can't get my files to do the "fast start" thing either. No matter what I do. I've got the "enable fast start" thing checked. Do I need to use my Quicktime Pro to "Save As" and make it a self contained movie? I'm stuck. Please help. I've learned so much from this forum already. I went to IDOG's web site to see his work and it looks incredible AND the files "fast start" How is it done??
Check it out.

If you have QT Pro then open the clip in the player and export it. Turn on fast start and other options. Set codecs to keep size down and playback reasonable. (Sorenson, MPEG-4, etc)

Hey thanks Scott!

The only thing is when I export from QT, for a 6 minute clip, it takes about 4 hours to render.
Does that make sense?

All depends on what codecs and other settings you have. Try saving out with a simple DV, uncompressed sound. That should go pretty quickly. Some codecs require a fair bit of time because they're comparing frames and doing fairly extensive calculations. If you have resizing and filtering going on at the same time then it will slow down.
I don't think Sorenson or MPEG-4 should be taking that long though.

I've also found that embedding the QT movie in an HTML file helps the movie start playing faster. Maybe it's just me, though.
