Please CRITIQUE this beer promo / ad. Or comment if it makes you want a cold one!

It's hard to comment sometimes without knowing the particulars, as I have run into many many shoots that I would have loved to shoot differently. But due to the circumstances had to shoot as given. That being said, I might have moved your Diva-Lite's in closer and shot through a 4x4 silk with bounce fill. I would have also added a back or rim light to separate the talent from the background. As well as adding a few small Fresnel's to set off the background a little better. But that's just one thought. There are a hundred different ways this could have been shot. As long as the client is happy, you are golden.

All the best!

Dave

100% agree Dave. I would have loved to do your exact set-up but only had 2 1/2 hours total to Set up, shoot, and break down.

Thanks for putting your eyes on it and I am glad our thoughts of improvement are similar.

Thanks for sharing. The customer was probably very happy. I agree with Dave. So often we have to shoot in such limited constraints to be able to work at all these days. I went to an all LED battery powered kit just for this reason. I have smaller LEDs that can be put on a light boom stand and give a backlight in a minute of setup. We have to overcome the time and still offer a superior product. Hair lights/back lights are very important to me as something that sets higher end work apart.

Audio wise I think the voices were crisp and easy to understand but there is a bit of room noise. How did you mic the scene? It is tough in large spaces. Maybe it bit more compression in post?

2 kino divas across from each other for the talent just outside of frame. 1 150w arri to light the glass and bottle. The background was lit with the house lights for the taps. As I mentioned time was too short to be to creative with the lighting.

Of course I haven't been to the location so I don't know what a wider shot looks like...but I would've moved them off the tap wall.

The bar itself (table part) doesn't feature anything that has to be there e.g. the sign, beer, "DB" etc. can be set up on a different table. Moving even 12 feet back (while keeping the same framing on talent) lets you show the atmosphere of the place and still features the tap wall/bar in the background.

For the master wide I'd use divas on talent just like you but maybe see what the 150w looked like across the taps, or other background element if the houselights did enough already.
