I am working on a documentary about fly fishing the local rivers.

I have put together a small teaser of part of an interview http://vimeo.com/55740930

I'd like to get some opinions regarding sound, color, etc. A lot of the filming of outdoor footage has been done, but I am just now getting to the interviews and could use some advice and tips on how to make those better.

Thanks!

I like it - what camera(s)/lenses were you using? And did you do this at 1080 or 720? I notice that shots of the actor from the left had low depth of field. When we get to the boat sequence, would you have been happy to have had access to the new Sony camera that has embedded gyros? The sound and color are fine. Personally, I did not like the bit where the sun overtook the scene but maybe others would consider that as a positive contribution to the recording.

Nice job. You might try stabilizing the shot that pans into the sun to see if you like the flow of it better. It's pretty rough right now.

The problem I had with the clip is it's super informative, but there's no story or anything to engage me to keep listening. I guess if this is a news show for locals who frequent that region then maybe it's perfect.

1) Run the lav cord under clothing. Especially with bright colour garments. Also you do not need a foam windscreen indoors.

2) Joe says lots of words, but they are all really just communicating "Arkansas fly fishing is great". He should be cut down heavily.

3) It would be cool to see some fisheries people releasing or spawning or raising fish etc.

Looks pretty though.

Tough crowd....I thought it was pretty damn good. Nice use of slider during interview, nice lighting, nice angles, good mix of b roll, good background music and volume. Yeah, you could hide the mic better, some shots arent hollywood perfection and are mildly crude, but overall it was solid.

Being a passionate fly fisherman myself, I would have preferred fewer shots of a talking guy and more pleasurable fishing shots. You didn't quite sell the area to me :o) But I also realise this is just a teaser.... a lot of the talking could be accompanied by riverside shots. Looking forward to seing the finished documentary!

I'm not one who believes microphones always have to be completely hidden in interview shots, but that lav cable running right down the outside of his jacket really bugged me. Tuck it under his clothes, at least. The mic itself wasn't offensive to my eye.

More B-roll and less talking head would make for a more interesting piece. The images and sound are basically solid, although you lost focus a couple of times in the field footage.

Visually it's great, especially the shots on the river. Really nice color and contrast.

As for the interview, it really depends on what you're doing this for. If this is meant to advertise the area for fisherman, then I would say all you need to do is a bit of editing to avoid repetitive statements. However if you want more depth in the piece, I would ask more personal questions. Perhaps ask them why they love fishing, what it means to them, etc.
