Please advice 2 young filmmakers on editing education

We are 2 young filmmakers, on a world tour, interviewing people and putting together a documentary film. We have no experience in filmmaking, only worked intensively in the field that we are exploring. We are funding the film ourselves, meaning budget is low.
Organisations in a niche field have shown interest to air the film at festivals, so we are keen to make this a professional looking piece of work.

We are shooting until the End of Feb 06 and have to show the movie at the Beg of June 06, meaning we have 3 months to complete the film from 100 MiniDV tapes filled with interviews.

We need advice from someone in the industry!

Problem:
- We have a Sony Vaio laptop with editing program Adobe Premiere 1.5 Pro
- We have no experience with editing, neither on Adobe Premiere nor on any other program
- We only have 3 months to produce a film, ready to screen

Q1: Should we buy ourselves a G5 MAC tower with Final Cut Pro software or should we not even bother and give the material out-of-hand to have the film edited by someone else?
Q2: Can we do the movie ourselves in 3months time as beginners, having high expections?
Q3: If Q2 yes, will taking a 4 week digital filmmaking course at the New York Film Academy allow us to learn everything we need to do this? They told us we could work on our project while doing the course. Cost for the course is 5.000 USD for 2 people.
Q4: The other idea was to hire someone once home in our home country who we pay to show us for half the price. Realistic?
Q5: In the meantime, what is the best way to learn? Studying books is not the most efficient way for the both of us. We are better in the learning-by-doing process.

Thank you very much. We appreciate your feedback.

You have a lot on your plate!

Since you already have a laptop with Premier you might as well start learning it. You said you only have three months but the dates you gave above indicate you have roughly one year from now? I'm confused.

If you indeed only have three months you'd be better off hiring an editor to help you complete the project in my opinion. If you can afford a $5000 class then you can afford a decent editor. I don't think you'll learn all you need to know in time to create what you wish to create.

Editing at it's core isn't rocket science as they say, but it takes a long time to develop your skills to create a truly artful and meaningful story. I've been at it for five years and what I create today is miles above my first few videos. It takes time.

If I were you I'd hire an editor and learn all you can in the meantime from that editor.

Cheers,

BB

Assuming that you have the proper equipment (camera(s) some lights, mics) I'd say stick with your laptop, find an editor and have fun making the doc.
