Pleasantville Effect

Ok, can anyone please tell me the best possible way to create a B&W person in a color enviroment, ie. Pleasant Ville.  Im guessing having the image doubled then adding a traveling matte in After Effects to the shape of the person on the above image and disaturating it.  I havn't yet tried it, but I'm guessing its going to look very strange around the edges, probably flicker.  I would say green screen, but we dont have the access nor do the traveling shots allow. There's also selective color saturation, but that only works on objects of one color different than the bacground.
Does anyone out there have the answe?!!  Again I want it to look as natural as possible. (Besides the no color thing)

You would do it exactly the same way. However, if you are working with full color actors, I think there is a little bit more to it than that, as each actor has multiple colors, most of which would be found in the background as well.

Re: Pleasantville Effect

the actual software they used was commotion pro through rotoscoping...

Justin, I own a copy of CommotionPro 3.1. Yeah, I know its the old version but it still gets the job done. I've have only used it maybe a couple of times till I got AE. If you're intrested in buying it, PM me. It's still new, comes with manual, dongle, etc. let me know if you're intrested because I'm willing to sell this dirt cheap. I'm talking flea martket prices. I got it for $1000 when it first came out.

Re: Pleasantville Effect

You stopped using it after you got AE? Is AE better than Commotion Pro. Or is Commotion Pro better than AE at just doing the B&W trick I want to accomplish?

Commotion Pro is the best program for rotoscoping. I never like rotoscoping and never had the patience. I was always into motion graphic animations & compositing and found AE more suited my needs. Yes I did stop using and never cared for rotoscoping. let me know if you're still intrested. :)

Re: Pleasantville Effect

well...you could also use Beizer masks in Vegas 5.0...but the only downside is that you have to go frame by frame cuttin around the objects...then add the B&W effect on the clip with the Beizer mask.
