Pleasantly surprised by DVD

Anyone else notice that, when you watch a DVD with Component out progressive 480P picture to a HDTV it Looks REALLY good. Like almost as good as the native 720P from the HVX Good......

I just got a component cable for my DVD player, i heard it increases quality, but i was skeptical about how much. I was watching them through S-Video, then stretching the letterboxed patch, to full screen. that looked, Ehh.... kinda crappy. But the 480P anamorphic looks AMAZING! I highly reccomend anyone who hasnt done this yet with thier HDTV to do it, it breathes new life in to all my DVD's. Fear and loathing in las vegas especially......

I still need to do that, mine's still connected via-S-video. Maybe that's why my films look so bad on there. Hm.

WOW. it is 2007 right? i can barely watch anything if its not HD. And none the less my own footage, you think you would want to see it the best possible.

We're still SD people. THousands invested regular old DVDs. BUt they look pretty good. I'm embarrassesd to mention the res on my ancient projector....

Yup yup, component is the only way to go. It really doesn't make me want to spend the money on any sort of HD-DVD solution anytime soon.

I don't have an HD tv. I have a 27" RCA tv made in 1982. Maybe it's time to upgrade, but they're so damned expensive.

That's actually a punch to the HVX. What TV are you viewing this on? Because, Component out to HDTv on my CRT isn't THAT bad by any means. It might look better than Composite, but it sure doesn't look like HVX out-to-HDtv.

Ouch.

By the way-- DVD from Macbook DVI to HDtv DVI from a Macbook is even better than component. Just did it last night and switched between 720 and 1080, minor difference between the two-- major difference between the DVD player's component out.

just went back, looked again... the difference between stretching a composite letterboxed 16:9 out of the 4:3 patch, to showing the Native 16:9 anamorphic out, is the same difference between the Anamorphic and the HVX 720. My bad. i was fooled by how nice the DVD looked. But its NIGHT and day difference between the two. Thank KHoli. I was kinda pissed the DVD's looked so good. but now i feel alot better. :)

If you want to take it even further (cheaply) -- get a $60 Toshiba upconverting DVD player and watch through HDMI. DVD's upscaled to 720 look particularly good.

Does it work? Then it's all you need.

It works ok... when the color isn't shifting to purple or I don't get dark spots randomly show up or it doesn't ghost itself and I see double...

I think I need a new tv...

i just thought people who are interested/doing video stuff would care more about how they watch theirs and others stuff. not saying everyone needs a 1080p (i did) but i think you owe it to the movies you are watching to view them in the best way possible.

Yes. It doesn't look as good as 1080p, but it's not so much different from 720p or 1080i that you'd notice it if they're not side-by-side (unless you're watching something from Pixar).

Which is one of the reasons I think Hi-Def DVD isn't going to catch on like wildfire, and certainly not like what DVD did as compared to VHS. Yes, there IS a difference -- but certainly not enough to get me to replace my DVD collection with Hi-Def versions.

I agree with David. I have my DVD player hooked up to my HD projecter via HDMI and it looks dang good, almost comparably sharp to some of the HD broadcasts I have seen, although Discovery HD always looks much better. I think DVD's still have alot of life, and from what I have seen of HD-DVD's I will not be replacing my current stock of DVD's. I may buy new DVD's in HD, but definitely not worth it to replace my entire collection.

I agree, but I usually have to prioritize. For me, that means HDTV loses out to new lighting, sound gear, software, trips to NAB...
