H265 looks very promising. Especially for streaming 4K/8K in the future. I think Netflix and the like will adopt it soon. Adobe is probably holding off on it for now because of the increased hardware requirements but eventually when the next generation of computers replace the current ones it will become a standard.

The patent licensing situation for it is kind of unclear at the moment -- there are two different groups asking to be paid, MPEG LA and HEVC Advance.
