Playing 16:9 footage on a 4:3 tv

Sorry folks, just a simple question, but I'm not 100% sure, so I'd better ask!

I'm about to shoot some 16:9 footage to mini DV tape on my HVX.(Squeeze Mode), and burn it to DVD. Nothing new about that, except that my client has just told me she will sometimes use a 4:3 tv to view it, and sometimes a 16:9.

Is this going to result in a stretched picture on the 4:3 screen, or should her DVD player automaticaly interpret the footage and adjust by adding bars? Do I need to do anything during compression to ensure it can play fine on both screens?

Thanks again!
