I imported GH1 1080 footage into FCP, I see it & it plays fine on FCP's viewers, but on my external monitor it freezes. When I stop the footage the ext. monitor will then show where I'm at on the timeline. Any ideas on what can be going on? Thanks.

How is your external monitor hooked up? I'm guessing firewire through a camera/ FW box?
What frame rate is your timeline at? What codec is set to? Prores?

The reason I ask is because if your not at 23.98 fps, (or 29.97) then it won't play. Same thing if you have the codec on anything other than dv and you're playing out the FW.

You cannot view anything that is NOT DV through that deck to a monitor. Playback via firewire to that deck must be DV. If it isn't...then you will only get a still frame.

For HD monitoring, you need an HD IO card and HD monitor...or you can use the IO device to downconvert the HD to SD for playing on that monitor. But then you are monitoring SD, and not full HD.

Decklink Intensity Pro
AJA IO Express
MOTO HDX-SDI

Thanks Shane, are these what I need:

Decklink Intensity Pro
AJA IO Express
MOTO HDX-SDI

The monitor is HD, whew. Now, I need the hardware, most of those are pretty steep except Decklink Intensity Pro, any workarounds?

MXO2 Mini and HDTV is decent.

Workarounds to view the footage properly? No...you need the HD IO... OR...you can edit in a DV timeline. But if you want HD, and to monitor HD, you need HD equipment.

So until I buy the required equipment, I can edit in DV and when I lock edit, transfer the HD footage to a HD timeline/sequence? Is that possible?

I'd just edit without the external monitor, then get the stuff when you need it. The complicated workflow of working on an DV timeline with HD footage, then trying to make it HD again won't be worth the trouble.
