Playback Settings - External Device - Interlaced??

Can someone help me... it may just need an explation.

I have the Panasonic TM300 and it records in full HD (1920x 50i). When I import it into Premiere Pro (CS4.2.1) is shows it as 25fps which makes sense to me. As I scrub through the timeline, it shows that 25 frames make a second of video.

What I don't understand is when I go to: Sequence Settings > Playback Settings > External Device = Monitor 2 (I have dual monitors on my computer), then every freeze frame on Monitor 2 shows an interlaced screen.

Shouldn't it show a full frame as per the preview screen. Any ideas?

its because computer screen are progressive so it puts to top and bottom feild together to make a single "frame".

This website (http://www.100fps.com/), has a great explanation.

This extract in particular is exceptionally relevant but it doesn't hurt to read the whole page.

Here is an example of what your digital camcorder does: Capture field1 (captures at half the height, or full height and then resizes down):

Capture field2:

They pretty much look the same. But wait, they ARE different. You can see by comparing the position of the thumb and the keyboard keys.

Now these two fields are mixed (=interlaced) into Frame1 (full height):

Thanks.

Is there a way in Premiere Pro CS4.2 to display it without the horizontal lines? I am sure that it worked in the past, ie when I viewed the footage in the Playback Settings > External Device = Monitor 2, it would show the frames exactly the same as in the preview window in CS4.

Any ideas on how to do this... assuming that it is possible.

IMO I don't see any advantage. and the preview window IS the same, it's just smaller so you cant really see it.

I must be doing something completely wrong as the preview window is NOT just a smaller version. The preview window is perfect, whilst the Monitor 2 shows a completely interlaced version.

Is there a setting somewhere where you can change which is displayed on Monitor 2?

I have noticed the same thing. Monitor 2 video has horrible interlace. For example, using a color edge wipe, it's a solid line on the preview monitor but shows as two lines on the second monitor. I haven't found any settings to change the look on the display. The end product is OK, but it is a little unsettling to see that all the time on a large monitor.

Good, so I am not the only one with this problem.

ATL - you may be on to something. I have my 2nd monitor connected on a NVidia 7200GS video card through DVI.

Is anyone aware of particular settings in the Nvidia control panel I should try? Otherwise the monitor works perfectly as I use Windows over two monitors.

Okay you have Progressive Vs Interlaced here.

Computer monitors are Progressive, and your footage is Interlaced.

So something has to be done to change the interlaced video into progressive fields.

As seen on 100fps.com, there are a few ways of doing this, premiere pro just chooses the quickest way which is just to display both fields at the same time.

I don't understand why Premiere Pro CS4 cannot show the frame in Monitor 2 exactly as it shows it in the preview window where it is not shown as interlaced.

Further to address ATL's suggestion...
I have gone through every option in the Nvidia Control panel with no success.

Does anyone know if there is an option in Premiere CS4 to fix this?

Do you preview a full frame on Monitor 2? Here you go. It would show no interlacing if you shot at 25p. The TM300 stores it as progressive segmented frame.

I suppose it takes one field out of a frame and scales it into preview window. This is simple, fast and shows no interlacing, so you can see the content, not the combing.

What do you mean by "preview a full frame on Monitor 2"? Is this an option in Premiere?

I realise I could use 25p on the TM300, however I don't like that look. 50i has been the same as my video editing for the last 10 years on SD and Premiere... and I have never had this problem. It's nice to be able to go frame by frame, 25 per second, and see clear images for accurate cuts.

I agree, it's probably doing that. However since Premiere goes to the trouble to make the preview window display correctly, I would hope that it would be possible to get the external Monitor 2 to display the same... only bigger.

Is there anyone here with contacts at Adobe they can put onto this? I have tried contacting them directly with no help.

Are you sure you know what interlaced video is? You cannot have a clear image if you watch a full video frame from interlaced video, unless there is no motion in the scene.

I don't see why you don't like the look of 25p, considering that you want to "go frame by frame, 25 per second" in Premiere.

So, you want the same deinterlaced image only bigger? I don't know how do achieve this in Premiere. In Vegas you can choose full, half or quarter frame. In half and quarter frame modes Vegas uses one field only without combing artifacts.

I think a few screen shots will better explain what I am trying to do.

(1) This is a screen shot of my Premiere Screen. Note the preview window on the left.

(2) Is a screen shot of the settings to get the video on Monitor 2

(3) Is a photo of Monitor 2 with the same frame. Note the horrible interlaced video.

What I would like is to get Monitor 2 to display the frame similar to what is in (1). Any ideas?

Thanks cranky!

What other options do you have under external device other than "Monitor:2 60 1280 x 1024p"?

I can see the screen shots. If hey are broken for you... can you explain how I should upload them so everyone can see.

The three options under External Device are:
- None
- DV: 25 720 x 576i
- Monitor: 2 60 1280 x 1024p
