Play/Stop shortcut?

New to FCP, and like what I see so far (especially loving Motion!)...anyway,

is it possible to have the space bar or another hot key make the play head go back to the start position once it is playing in the timeline?

In other words, instead of stopping the playhead at its current location, is there a way to make it automatically go back to the point it started from?

I've searched the forum and can't seem to find an answer here or the user manual.

I'm trying to cut things really close to audio cues and it's hard to "see" where I was when I started the playhead moving.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Not sure, actually.

However... here are two things I do:

1) Place the playhead with the mouse and hit spacebar... but don't move the mouse. Then click the mouse again -- works best if you have a mouse that doesn't move... trackball like.

2) Use the trim tool!!! Cut it close... then use your [ and ] keys on the edit to trim it up. Also - loop around playhead is a good feature to use.

This is the best solution that I know of:

Line up your playhead where you'd like and press the "\" key. This will begin playback a few seconds before the playhead and will play through several seconds after the playhead. After it plays back the allocated time the playhead will snap back to the location you set. The default playback is somewhere around 6 seconds pre roll and 2 seconds post.

Now here's what you do:

Open User Preferences > Select The Editing Tab

Set the Pre-roll to something you're comfortable with. Mine is set at 5 seconds.

Now set the Post-roll to something long. At least a minute.

Here's a trick you can do with the post roll - set it to 30+ minutes. Most likely it will be WAY longer than you need BUT if you press the spacebar during playback, the playhead will snap back to your established location.

Sound good?
