Play out on hour doc crash's about 18 minutes in

I'm trying to do a play-out of a 1 hour SD doc. And about 16 to 18 minutes in it hiccups and either stops, goes out of sync or freezes. I'm on a Dual 2.7 Power PC with 6 gigs of ram using a firewire to a Sony deck.
The footage is on a SATA external 1 TB drive

This might sound dumb, but is there a title or something similar that isn't rendered? Even if it's a frame's worth, it will usually abort playback to tape, etc.
