Planning to purchase Lighting kit

HI Limited,
I responded to this post in the other thread you posted it in earlier. Please refer to that for more detail...In short, I think $700 would be waisted on that kit.

Sorry

Sorry

I just dont know what to get I just want something simle for now then I'll work myself up to getting more lights.Any suggestions?I want to spend around $650
I will be doing indoor shots and outside shots so I would need a reflecter, and barn doors for colro in the future. Thanks

Look into one of the Lowel kits. You can get a starter setup in that price range and add more as you go. Certainly better money spent than the kit you linked us too. Honestly, I really like my Lowel DP lights a LOT. The RIFA is a GREAT sofftbox (but a 1 trick pony), and the Tota is wonderful adding ambient to a room, or as a background wash, or for bouncing off foamcore for a lovely soft light with real punch.

Look into a good lowell kit and stock up on some china balls with some 500 and 250 watt photofloods. You could easily get into a very decent light kit for about $800, give or take. Also, check around locally for used lights. Just make sure to check them out before buying.

also, look into cool lights

and as far as the lights you posted, I would definitely pass on those, you'll regret it. They're cheap.

I talked to Richard Andrewski a Cool Lights representative and he recommended I get the following
CL-SFT1 Softbox Kit 5600K
DTW150 150w Compact Tungsten Fresnel
CL-TF0650 650w Compact Tungsten Fresnel
What you guys think about them and if anyone has had any luck with them..
THANKS

Thats a good option.

I have a 4 bank and 2 bank coollights lights.

Love them.

The kit you were recommend is good. What I usually take with me on smaller shoots is similar, expect none of my lights were purchased new, i got them all second hand off the forums here or Ebay.

The one thing that I probably wouldn't get if it were my first kit is the soft-box kit just yet, I'd get an open face light and a soft-box to go with it as I don't think the the Coollights kit will ever produce hard shadows and sometimes you want exactly that. I would probably get a 300 and some foam board but if you want a nice big soft light then go for it.

What I used to bring before I got my LTM 300w pepper is: 1 LTM 650w pepper, and 3 250 Lowell pros.

What I usually use now is 1 LTM 650W pepper, 1 LTM 300w pepper, 1 Lowell pro and one of Coollights 150w fresnel, I don't know the exact product name though, as well as 1 home made 2X55 flo as well as various lighting control units.

Keep in mind, where the fixtures are important, what is more important is control over the light and knowing how to light.

Anyway good luck, let us know what you wind up getting.

Thanks for your comments, Matt and James. Just to clear up any confusion, any of our fresnels produce hard shadows though if that's a goal for your kit. They use a single, tiny point light source and thus produce one normal shadow as you would want with such a light.

Sorry, what I should have said is that I don't think the Coollight's soft-box kit will ever produce hard shadows. I know the Fresnel's will. My mistake.

Exactly and thats the reason we expanded to offer other options. No kit is complete without both hard and soft light if you want to be prepared for anything and sometimes shadows are a wanted feature for many reasons.

Can anyone recommend an video to learn more about lights that talks about the different lights and types that do different things and pretty much all about lights....LO
Well thanks alot I'm just a little lost when it comes to lights..

1 LTM 650W pepper, 1 LTM 300w pepper

This is a great recommendation. I would put most of your money into one light- a key light. The other stuff you can get at Home Despot. I bought some cheap Lowels and every time I bumped them went $30 for a bulb. The heavy duty stuff never lets you down. Call a stage and light company- they have the deals, plus they have the jells you will need
