Planning on switching to Vegas

I’m seriously contemplating a switch to Vegas. I don’t have much money but if I do buy, I want to buy a legit software, one I can register. I’m saying this because I’ve been checking out ebay lately and some of the software price for Vegas over there looks too good to be true.

Do you guys have a good suggestion as to where to buy Vegas at a reasonable price and what to look for? I’m sure this has been asked many times but thanks for indulging me:) Also, I'd appriciate any additional suggestion.

My "additional suggestion" would be to pick up two books....one, Instant Vegas by Douglas Spotted Eagle and Jeffery Fisher...it's thin, not too jam packed with info, a concise, simple to understand way to learn the basics and even skim a wee bit into the slightly advanced...

Then, and if you only get one get this one.....Vegas 5 Editing Workshop by Douglas Spotted Eagle. It's a text book sized jam friggin packed full blown "manual" that will take you from the bare bone basics to some of the deepest depths. It will insure that you find all the nooks and cranies in which hide some of the most awesome creative exploration tools you will ever command the helm of, and give you enough of an explanation of each to lead you well into the door where you can then find your own way well. To me, this book should come standard with Vegas much like Barry Greens book comes with the DVX.

Also.....take your time....once you start to "get it" your learning will flow as strong as the mighty Mississippi river....dont get frustrated and give up with your initial blind clumsyness...it's a new world in there and the more time you spend in it clicking and tweaking, the more at home you will become.

Kind words, thank you, Daniel.
Also view the VASST site, as there are over 600 tutorials for Vegas, plus loads of files you can download and experiment with from users all over the world. And of course, this forum has a lot of great helps.

There are also training DVDs from myself and Tim Duncan available.

Hey guys, a hearty welcome to Edward Troxel, who posts under the user id: "jeditdv". Mr. Troxel is a very well-respected Vegas master, and his newsletters are great reading. He is also the creator and proprietor behind the popular "Excalibur" plug-in for Vegas.

Now with active participation by David Jimerson, Douglas Spotted Eagle and Edward Troxel, we have some heavy hitters supporting our Vegas-using members! :)

Hey, now, let's not go crazy!

I do heartily recommend anything by Spot or Edward. They're both long-standing and well-respected members of the Vegas training community and go way, way back with the product.

Wow, thank you! I’ll be sure to check out the books, the websites, and the news letters. Thank you again.

John,

I’m not a student anymore:( Just graduated! I’m looking for non-academic software because I plan on doing this seriously and I think you can’t use student copy for business or something. I don’t want to upset anybody.

Luke,

I now edit on Premiere 1.5, I edited on 6.5 for a long time and just switched. I’m getting fairly comfortable but from what I see on this board and what I’ve read, Vegas’s 24P support seems to be much better than Premiere’s. I just got my DVX and I want a fluid workflow, I’m hoping Vegas will do that for me.

Thank you again, this board is really great.

The Academic purchase is identical to the Retail purchase. No restrictions other than the price for students. No limitations on use.

Whats a student to do? Throw it away after graduation?

Okay, jumping tracks -- just saw Zack's banner. The prophet Yahweh? Whatever happened to that guy -- he was supposed to summon a fleet of spaceships here in Vegas to collect on the $1 million reward from The Amazing Randi, but that was supposed to happen last July and I never heard any more about it...

How is the transition to Vegas if I am using Avid Adrenaline (PC) regularly and FCP 5 a little?

Look I am quoting myself, does anyone have a answer? Someone commented about my signature, thanks. I read that huge post a month or so back FCP vs. Vegas. But I am debating to get a iMac then save for FCP or build a PC and get Vegas. Big fan of Mac platform not a huge fan of the pricetag on FCP, like what I hear about Vegas but not a huge fan of PCs - nor do I know how to build a PC.

Thanks

Moving from either Adrenaline or FCP is about the same in terms of moving to Vegas. Key shortcuts are similar, and can be made identical. Rolling and slip edits are different...you'll find Vegas a LOT faster than Adrenaline, and a little faster than FCP. You'll miss media management features from both AVID and FCP, but not significantly so unless you're doing very long form projects. Vegas is much faster overall than either one of the other apps, but that's more an opinion than something you can find facts to support. Vegas has much better audio than either one, and in terms of just plain editing features, it's better than both. Titling is a lot different in Vegas from either of the other two. Vegas is a LOT less picky than Adrenaline about media on the timeline.
Does this help?

Honestly, the only thing I've seen Mac do that I wish Vegas could do was the cool titles with Live Type. I'm sure Vegas can do them, but it's all manual as far as I know ... and FCP/Live Type appears pretty robust in FX as well.

Otherwise, everything that's been said here is legit. As far as Zack's Q, I know Vegas is different than the standard NLE, but that's also part of what's made it so great. Myself, for example, have never seen anyone else edit, taken a class, etc. I SHOULD have purchased Spots' book, but didn't, and HAVE purchased the Vegas 5 DVD 9 months ago and still have never gotten around to watching it due to time. Bottom line, it's EXTREMELY user friendly and easy to pick up. Intuitive.
