Planning on heading to San Francisco in a few days

Hello you all,

I'm planning on heading to San Francisco in a few days. Without interrupting someone's work schedule, would it be alright that I can get a tour of a film set? Can't be in Los Angeles though. I'm interested in this to get an open mind on filmmaking. Willing to be a PA for an hour or two.

Thank you
Zach

It's usually extra work accommodating volunteers, whether this is extra producing work communicating/introducing you to various crew members, getting permission, or insurance issues that arise with having you on set.

By this I mean don't get discouraged - at first it seems strange that a project wouldn't accept free help. But there are many moving pieces on a film set, so don't take it personally if people aren't jumping at the chance to have an extra set of hands.

Unless you've already found someone to help with your request before your trip, I'd forget the film set/large studio type experience. The great thing is film sets come in all shapes and sizes.

At the same time the harsh truth is the film industry has a question mark over its head at the moment. Keeping filmmaking as a hobby rather than a career might be the best thing you can do.

Came back from my trip. Learned it is just a job like any other except it takes a lot of patience, relaxation, quietness, and focus. It is a myth the loudest one makes it in Hollywood, it actually is the most down to earth one, or the voice of reason. Anyway, the size of camera equipment is actually smaller than what it looks. Literally as a 6'4" guy I am surprised how small a C500 Mark II is in real life. It is literally the size of a small box with a lens in front. Another thing I noticed is that the film industry is highly private with their filmmaking, reason being is the protection of the image, and all of its legal ramifications. If someone gets their image before them, they are screwed. Another thing I noticed is that most people feel awkward about low budget independent films as opposed to big budget films. The infamous quote that movie making is like an operation with a laser as opposed to theater being one of a scapel reigns true to me now.

I talked with someone who was from the film industry about movie making and now I see where I made the mistake on my first short film, I was not serious enough at that time.
