I have just been watching the BBC's 'Planet Earth' and i'm just amazed by the LONG panning/tilting/tracking time-lapsed shots of the seasons changing, plants and trees sprouting etc....

Im just curious as whether anyone knows how they achieve these incredible shots and whether they have some kind of amazing camera rig or they are massively altered in post....?

cheers!

Most the plant shots were done in a terrarium with controlled lighting. The moving time lapse with the trees changing color was done by taking a few stills a day with the sun in roughly the same position and moving the camera a few feet after each shot. It probably took them 2-3 months to complete that shot. Good stuff! I love that series.

The tree top shots were done with hot air ballon with a engine on it to steer. Ryan ment the motion control was for the terarium shots, they used the heligimble on a chopper for the altitude shots, I guess you could call that a motion controll rig but it is also a gyro. Buy the dvd's and watch the making of it, it tells you have they got those shots. There is also a book about it that can be bought at amazon.com

If you have the dvd set, you can see how they shot in Madagascar with the hot air balloon with an engine attached. They crashed a few times... Its a fun extra to see.
