Placement of lights

I shot a group practicing in a basement of a house yesterday. I set up 3 lights. I raised them up as high as I could get them. My problem came when I was shooting close ups, you could see the shadow of the camera & mattebox in the shot on the singer. So for future shoots how do I light to avoid shadows when i am shooting a band and need to get up on them for close ups. Should I just stand back and zoom into them?

Camera should always be behind lights.

EDIT: Or beside, off axis.
