place for sound effects

I'm doing a commercial that has a bunch of quick camera moves (like swish pans and quick push-ins, that sort of thing). I was wondering where you find the sounds that complement those moves. Like the 'whoosh' or the "swish" that people are used to hearing whenever they see those shots. Will I have to pay for these shots? Or is there a free domain somewhere with them?

Sound-Ideas does good work; I have the General 6000 and it was worth every penny.

Take a look at this one:

Or some of the other volumes that they have. These are in queue on my 'must-have' list!

I have found sounddogs.com to be great when you just wanna buy a sound effect here and there. But at $6 each they add up! They're good quality though. And you can search thousands and thousands of sounds to find the one you want.

Well first I should say that the way to get the perfect whoosh for your shots is to hire me!, or some other post sound person. But if all you are looking for is whooshes the design part is fairly simple. Get a decent recorder and a decent mic and go somewhere thats reasonably quiet and record them. Basically swing various things past the mic. Long bamboo poles work well, those green things that hold up plants, coat-hangers, telephone cables, whips, stiff wire etc. Cut slice and you will probably want to slow them down a bunch to get that whoosh rather than the quicker swish. It may sound silly but that is how the big boys do it. I cut all the hits and whooshes for two Jackie Chan films and thats how we got all the whooshes. An hour spent recording will get you more good stuff than three hours trying to find it on the web. THe problem with buying them is that you will still have to muck with them to get them to fit. You will get better results making your own.

I tend to not use straight up sounds from a library by themselves for design stuff like what you are doing. I'll design a sound from them, or I'll record a bunch of stuff. I hate it when I hear stuff right out of the libraries that I have on TV or in a movie, and they weren't even designed so at least us sound geeks couldn't recognize them.

Unless you are talking the Wilhelm scream:

No better insider audio geek joke then that. It's at the point now where I am hearing this in over half the big budget Hollywood films. I will be sitting in the theater and the world is coming to end up on the screen, I hear the Wilhelm scream and bust out laughing. For some reason my fellow movie goers think I am nuts. :)

It took awhile of me pointing it out to my wife before she started noticing it herself and now she gives me the evil stink eye everytime she hears it. At least now she doesn't think I am a sadist for laughing at all those people dying horrible deaths.

Cheers
