PL adapters

Even though the flange distance is compatible, it seems that there arent too many options for PL to EF adapters. Metabones doesnt make one..probably because its a very thin adapter...perhaps causing issues with mirrors? What are the best PL to EF adapters available?

Also has anyone used an optica expander? Either 16mm to s35 or s35 to FF. I see a few conpanies making these now. What kind of results can I expect? I have a bunch of vintage glass and wondering how the expanders would affect the image if I wanted to make it practical for some modern day cinema cameras and DSLRs

The problem with PL to EF adapters is that the throat of the EF mount is too narrow for many prime lenses, for some reason they tend to have bigger backsides beyond the flange than zooms. I have a very decent adapter, but it's very limited as to what PL lenses will fit on it due to this - in fact the only lenses I've had luck with on it are Angenieux zooms, which have short backsides on their mounts which don't reach back to the narrow throat. I haven't tried many newer lenses on it, however - I kinda stopped trying to use it on anything but my old zoom.

No they don't. They are not retrofocal designs. Not many wide and normal older cine lenses are. The newer lenses , since they are mostly derived from DSLR counterparts, are retrofocal so they have more space between the lens and the focal plane.

I have the IBE HDx35 optical adapter to use 2/3" lenses on s35 sensors(2/3" sensors are pretty close to s16. About 20% difference). There will be some image degradation. How much depends on the individual lens and how "good" it is to begin with. If you're not intercutting with native s35 glass, no one but you may notice. And it will also cost you about two stops of light(I lose about 2.5 going from 2/3" to s35). Not that big of a deal outside during the day, but at night or inside and low-light situations, it may be a problem.

Some cameras, like the F5/55 have built-in "s16/center crop" modes, so you don't need optical expansion, but you're going to probably be limited to 2K resolution, at the most.

The main issue with a PL to EF adapter is that EF cameras have a pin block inside to make electrical connection to the lens for stuff like autofocus and image stabilization. That block is about 10mm behind the mount and most PL lenses will extend too far into the camera and hit the block, making it physically impossible to mount the lens. When I say "most PL lenses" it means about 99% of them.

Actually the main issue is that the internal diameter of the EF mount is about 53.5mm and the PL pilot diameter is 54mm so it will not fit past the EF mount ears. The pins are about 9mm behind the ears...

Here is the CPT 14mm T1.5 mounted to the FS7 with the metabones PL to E Mount Adapter:
