pixel for pixel display via component?

I've read a bunch of threads but I'm still confused. I want to edit in FCP on a Mac Pro in HDV and preview pixel for pixel from the timeline to a Dell 2407 monitor. The Decklink HD Extreme and the Kona LHe both get great reviews, but only provide component output - if you want output to the digital DVI port on the monitor, you've got to add the HDLink or the HDP products.

So my question is, do you need to go into the DVI port on the monitor in order to get true pixel for pixel display, or do you get essentially the same picture with an analog component signal?

Incidentally, I'm looking at the stand-alone Matrox MXO box, which does provide a digital output to the DVI port but doesn't provide any functionality for capturing. I haven't figured out whether or not I want to give up capturing for portability, plus it doesn't have much of a track record yet.

Thanks!

I'm not sure about the pixel accuracy through component, but my guess is that you're ok. The resolution will anyway be "high enough by far"...

More of a concern would be the caracteristics of any of the displays you're mentioning vs a proper video monitor. The Dell (I have it and the Apple 23") is notorious for its noisy video signals. Great computer monitor, though.

The only "semi legit" way to go is with the HDLink or similar, as these boxes emulate the characteristics of a video display.

I used the HDLink for a week with the 23" Apple.

Then I bought a video monitor.

I actually think using "Digital Cinema Desktop" is as good a solution as the HDLink... almost... And you'll get the pixel accuracy you ask for.

I also would prefer to use the Apple 23" to the Dell 24" for this kind of use be it with the HDLink or with the Digital Cinema Display function.

Whatever way you go, you'll need to read the scopes for CC'ing.

Others may disagree here.

Thanks Gunleik. I've been wondering about the Digital Cinema Desktop. I may need something like the DeckLink for other purposes, but I'm primarily interested in frame accuracy and detail. I've seen elsewhere that these kind of cards also provide more detail than the Digital Cinema Desktop, but it may be one of those judgements you have to make yourself...

Thanks again!

Component video is an analog color difference interface, so a "pixel-for-pixel" concept is not applicable. As gunleik stated, its resolution should be "high enough..." for most applications.
