pink faces

How do people deal with the red in people's faces? I'm shooting 24p. Any lighting tricks?

thanks

I notice that many people have a lot of red in their skin tone and video seems to accentuate it so they look kind of sunburned, like red highlights, especially on the nose and cheekbones. Some people have fairer skin so its less of a problem. Maybe its the lights I'm using (250 watt work lights) or a reflection from something but I thought it was a common problem.

thanks!

make sure your whit balanced. .. aside from that it sounds like your exposure may be a bit hot. youll get this oversaturated orange flat looking stuff on skin tones (especially caucasions) before it bows out to white if theres enough surface area to get the DV compressions undies in a bunch. try toning down the exposure a little to see if it helps

Work light can contibute to the RED but most impostant is to do a WB everytime the lighting conditions change as NEil suggests.

The RED can be taken out or minimized using Color Correction (preferrably a 6way-cc) and I have heard some powder can help take the red out of the actors faces as well.

ON these grabs; I specifically OVERSTAURATED but in hindsight would have dialed the RED down.

yeah, bad skin tone screams amateur! Thanks for the advice, its helpful. It's possible I may have forgot to re-balance for the shot in question, and my exposure may have been a little off. I think powder would probably help a little but I'm shooting a music video and I'm not sure the band would take kindly to me powdering them..

John-
Am I missing something? The grabs look great. I love oversaturation. I can't seem to see the red you are talking about. Also, I wanted to ask, do you achieve this oversaturation mainly through your camera settings, mainly through post or is a fair mixture of the two?

I see the red pretty clearly, although it doesn't really bother me too much in those shots. It's basically the blood rising to the surface of the skin, like blushing. Video seems to really make it prominent though. Film is more forgiving. I prefer a warm tone, but more towards yellow than red, like a 70s film, thats why I'm trying to deal with the red.

I think you can make video look warm without destroying skin tones though. I really can't stand bad skin tones! One of my weird pet peeves I guess.
