I remember watching this hidden gem about 30 years ago and recently decided to see if I could dig up some info on it. To my surprise, it was available on region 1 DVD. I ordered it immediately.

When I got it, I was excited to read that it was remastered with cleaned-up color, image stabilization, 5.1 sound, enhanced 16:9 widescreen, etc. The job they did to restore this stop-motion animation film was incredible to say the least. They show some before and after clips in the special features and you can see that the painstaking restoration effort was a true labor of love.

This was an absolutely delightful movie. It centers around a humble inventor who's former assistant steals an engine gizmo from him and proceeds to overtake the racing circuit. Rimspoke, the inventor, builds a race car with his anthropomorphic friends to challenge his nemesis.

I can't say enough about the attention to detail in this masterpiece- From the car parts and the facial expressions to the incredibly finite movements of the characters and the detail and syncing of the audio. I had forgotten how a movie like this can be a true testament to the creative art of filmmaking and story telling.

If you get the chance to watch this great movie (for kids of ALL ages), do it. Check out the detailed movement of almost every character right down to the dog on the harp players shoulder swaying in perfect rhythm to the music while the band is playing at the unveiling ceremony of the new car.
