I came across a radio interview with German filmmaker Wim Wenders (Buena Vista Social Club, Wings of Desire) about his new movie PINA 3D.(It's actually a documentary about choerographer Pina Bausch) To my surprise he shot it in 3D, when 3D movie ideas were still in its infancy.

I haven't seen it yet, hoping to catch it next week if I can find a ticket. (Vancouver film festival has just started)
He said very interesting things about 3D technology from a classical filmmaker point; how it helped him to capture his vision on Pina.(I think he waited about 20 years for a proper technology to arrive)
I think Avatar was released right when they were about to start the filming, and during the radio interview he said he loved it and thinks it is one of the great examples of 3D productions...
