pieces of equipment

I was wondering what piece of equipment changed the most your efficiency/creativity making films. Something that you'd always thought you could do fine without, but when you got it you realized that you were missing out.

(besides a dvx)

NLE Computer ;D

I started back when 3/4" decks ruled the world. Just 3 decks, a controller, and a mixer. Then the Amiga Video Toaster came along and a whole new world of possibilities opened up. Next was the Toaster Flyer (non-linear editor). Then things really got interesting! So I would say non-linear editing changed the face of filmmaking for me. IMO. I don't think anyone out there could say they want to go back to linear editing and throw away their computer. Accept maybe when it crashes and you lose everything! >:(

Re: pieces of equipment

I'm not that old, but when I started learning all this stuff, knowing how to load 1" open-reel videotape was required knowledge. This industry is very dynamic in that there is old technology in no danger of being improved and new technology that changes almost day to day.

Since PK already said what I would say...I'll add...

Balanced, high CRI fluroescent lighting.

In terms of the actual industry, I think Short-arc heavy metal lighting (HMI), steadicam and video compression probably did more to actually change the way we do things, but from my own personal standpoint...kinoflo changed the way I looked at lighting.

I also would say NLE.
I started cutting film on a Moviola, way back when and doing audio fades with metalic tape along the optical track.

But in reality, it all has changed...for the better, no more need to do 16mm onelights, then select scene color correction at $500 per hour.

Most of it can be done with well exposed footage and a little tweaking in FCP or AE.

Video compression and the Internet.

I review so much post work on the web now. I can easily do my post work in LA, or Canada or Portland or wherever and know everything that is going on. This saves SO much money and makes it easy for me to work with people across the globe!
