When I do a picture in picture, or any "two or more video images at one time" effect, I dont want the harsh edges of the frame on the upper video. Is there any way I can dissolve the edges of the video on the upper layer so that there is a blending of the upper and lower layered videos?

Sure just apply a feather edge effect, by dropping a the Feather edge filter to the PIP's
