Pick ONE movie for cinematography excellence

Re: Pick ONE movie for cinematography excellence

Hello everyone and Happy New years!. It's a shame we're only allowed to pick one movie because there are so many great ones out there, but I will have to go with my favorite "The Last Samurai". I have watched this movie over and over again. People may not agree with me, but I think it's a masterpiece. The soundtrack is also supberb. My two cents.

Just saw The Aviator and read the latest article in American Cinematographer. Beautiful in its conception and execution.

Have to agree with the Godfather, in fact I'm amazed this thread went three pages until mentioned!! Thank you John Hudson. Also, I really like the lighting and look of Payback.

Amelie (France, 2001)

Every frame is a work of art. See for yourself. The cinematographer is a genius. The use of color is incredible. Watch the Making of Amelie on the DVD to truly appreciate the effort behind the movie. ...Disjecta mentioned it earlier but I really think it needs a second mention. Amelie.

Take a look!

"Dark City", by Alex Proyas. That edges out "American Beauty", but only slightly.

Other ones that spring to mind:

"Ed Wood"
"Sleepy Hollow"
"The Shining" (1980)
"Quills"

Re: Pick ONE movie for cinematography excellence

duh, BLADE RUNNER!!! actually all of Ridley Scott's films have astounding cinematography!

But I love Sven Nykvist too. Fanny and Alexander, What's eating Gilbert Grape... Subtle and beautiful.

Conrad Hall-A-maze-ing. Actually probably better than Scott...

Stanley Kub. darn.

Re: Pick ONE movie for cinematography excellence

probably something by Mario Bava the Italian horror director. His movies are lit in such an atmospheric way, it's like seeing moving pieces of art.

also Lifeboat by Hitchcock

David Lynch films, too

Re: Pick ONE movie for cinematography excellence

If I have to choose one it will be a DP, not a movie.

This time it has to be Conrad Hall.

I've read all the postings in this thread and decided to share a interesting experience.
In 1990 I attended a lecture with Freddie Young at The London Film School (at the time the best Film School in the world if you want to became a Cinematographer). Of course most of the talking was about his collaborations with David Lean. "Lawrence of Arabia" was mentioned over and over. But, after a while he let go that his favorite (actually the work he was most proud of it) was "Ryan's Daughter", and he went on and on why this was the bigger challenge and success of his long a brilliant career.

Re: Pick ONE movie for cinematography excellence

The Cook, The Theif, His Wife, And Her Lover, trully any of
Peter Greenaway's films, The Belly Of An Architect has some of the finest footage of Rome ever shot.

Re: Pick ONE movie for cinematography excellence

"The Yearling" is a cinematic masterpiece. Aside from the cinematography, the lighting is just as spectacular.

"Gone With the Wind" is another masterpiece.

Jimmy Crabes work in the first "ROCKY" is stunning.

The Godfather I and II, especially II

Anything by Spielberg. He used the best DP's.

And who can forget Sergio Leones, "Once Upon a Time in the West".
